Her mentor is one of the best female athletes in the world, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, which tells you all you need to know about her. But there’s more to her than her mentor. She is also a three-time U.S. national champion and won two NCAA Division I titles. So excelling in track and field is kind of her thing. And she proved it again today in Tokyo, Japan. Anna Hall became the first woman to win the Heptathlon at Worlds since 1993. And of course the last American woman to win at Worlds was Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

The World Athletics Championship for 2025 is taking place in Tokyo, Japan and it began on September 13 and will conclude on September 21. For the uninitiated the heptathlon is a grueling, two-day, seven-event competition that determines who is the world’s best female athlete. Today Hall proclaimed herself to be that woman with her gold medal finish in the event. Unseating defending world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain.

But Hall was also joined on the podium with bronze medalist American Taliyah Brooks. Brooks recorded a personal best and shared the bronze with Johnson-Thompson. The U.S. won two medals in the heptathlon at an Olympics or worlds for the first time since 1987.

However, it hasn’t been an easy road for Hall who suffered with knee problems since she won bronze in her World Championships debut in 2022. Her performance this year proved she could gut it out and still come off victorious. She dominated the field while putting up a total of 6,888 points in Tokyo. 174 more points than runner-up Katie O’Connor of Ireland. Joyner-Kersee holds the world record of 7,291 points and the top six scores in history overall.

Hall expressed how she felt about winning the gold that she worked so hard to earn:

“This gold means so much,” said Hall. “Jackie (Joyner-Kersee, the last US athlete to win a world heptathlon title) and I have talked about the Worlds and I am so glad to finally get my gold. I struggled with injuries in 2024 and my body did not let me perform to my full potential in Paris (at the Olympics). Moving forward, I will continue to put my head down and try to improve in every event.”

Hall said she was also glad to have her competitive spark back now that she’s fully healthy, stating:

“I came back this year, and I felt like I really lost my love, almost, for the sport,” she said. “I was just sad all the time. I was doing all my workouts, but I didn’t want to be there. It took a while for my spark to come back.”

And America is glad to have her back too. Congratulations to Anna Hall on her Heptathlon gold medal at the Tokyo 2025 World Championship!
