Angel Reese Has Become The Queen Of Rebounding

Last night the Chicago Sky faced off against the Minnesota Lynx. Although Chicago lost the game 79-74 something good came out of it and a record was broken. With that game Angel Reese has become the queen of rebounding, snatching her 405th rebound of the season. In so doing, she surpassed two-time WNBA champion and eight-time All-Star Sylvia Fowles. Reese finished the game with 17 points and 19 rebounds.

Reese went into the game averaging 12.9 rebounds and 13.2 points per game. And in that regard Reese had already broken another record. That of three-time WNBA champion and two-time MVP Candace Parker’s consecutive double-double streak. Whew, Ms. Reese has been one very busy rookie this season.

But unfortunately her team, the Chicago Sky, hasn’t had a winning record this season falling to 11-21. But in spite of that Reese continues to contribute to the team. She has posted three consecutive games in August with at least 11 points and 20 rebounds. In the 31 regular season games she has played in she posted at least 10 rebounds in 26 of them.

And she’s only getting started. If she can keep up her 12.9 rebounds per game she will break another record. Currently Tina Charles has the record for rookie per game season (11.7) and Fowles’ single-season rebounds per game record (11.9). In addition, she could also break Charles’ rookie defensive rebound record (11.9).

Here are some of the other records Reese has already claimed:

  • First rookie in NBA/WNBA with consecutive 20-rebound games since Shaquille O’Neal (1993).
  • First player in WNBA history with multiple games of 10-plus offensive, defensive rebounds in the same game.
  • Most consecutive double-doubles in WNBA history (15).
  • Angel Reese shatters the W’s single-season rebounding record, surpassing Sylvia Fowles (404 in 2018)

Angel Reese Has Become The Queen Of Rebounding

Between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, the WNBA records book is being rewritten with frequent regularity. And they’re only rookies! What in the world will they do going forward? It’s no wonder the WNBA has been gaining fans at a lightening quick pace.

But you also have to love the humility and team spirit both women have displayed. Many have been having heated discussions about which one of them should be named Rookie of the Year. But in that regard Clark simply said, “Both of our teams are competing for playoff spots and that’s our main focus.” Reese agreed stating, “We don’t either care about the Rookie of the Year… I think you guys have made it a big thing.”

I’ll be happy for whichever one wins. But I’m more interested in seeing how their careers continue to develop.
