Angel Reese Declares for the 2024 WNBA Draft- Goodbye to LSU

The time has come. The 6’3 forward is moving on to other basketball pastures. Angel Reese declares for the 2024 WNBA Draft and says goodbye to LSU.

World renowned magazine Vogue and sports network ESPN broke the news. Alexa Philippou who covers women’s basketball for ESPN reveals,

“BREAKING: Angel Reese has declared for the 2024 WNBA Draft, she tells Vogue. The LSU star is coming off a SEC player of the year campaign as she led the Tigers to the Elite Eight.”

While many may only tie Reese’s legacy to one hand gesture after winning the championship game in 2023. You can’t ignore her impressive college stint. Angel even mentioned some of her numerous accomplishments during her recent interview with Vogue. Reese states,

“I’ve won a national championship, I’ve gotten [Southeastern Conference] Player of the Year, I’ve been an All-American. My ultimate goal is to be a pro—and to be one of the greatest basketball players to play, ever. I feel like I’m ready.”

Furthermore, she’s also been extremely successful off the court. In this new found world of NIL. During her LSU tenure, Reese has become one of the most profitable and highest earning student athletes. Inking deals with Amazon, Beats by Dre, Goldman Sachs and many more. Her merch can even be found in sports video games.

She is a high profile player; who will definitely help to bring more star power to the WNBA. Her and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark will certainly help add even more value to the league. Their playoff matchups have been some of the most watched games in history. For instance, their 2024 Elite 8 game garnered 12.3 million viewers.

Although, both ladies have made it clear they do like each other. And respect each other’s game. Their “rivalry” still brings in the numbers.

Therefore, having them meet up throughout the season in the WNBA is great for basketball; and great for bringing more interest to the women’s league. Additionally, with the WNBA wanting a better tv deal; having two players around who helped make television history. Probably will help things progress positively.

Nevertheless, Angel knows her entrance into the WNBA will not be a cake walk. There will be challenges going from college to Pro; but she is ready. She again tells Vogue about her decision to move on from LSU and how she believes things will go for her in the future. Vogue mentions,

“With another year of college eligibility left, her decision to go pro, Reese says, was not made lightly—especially considering all that she’s leaving behind. She may never experience a fan base like the one she has in Baton Rouge, she tells Vogue; the resources in most WNBA organizations, from the staff down to the locker room facilities, pale in comparison to those at LSU; and flying private, as she has rather frequently over the past few years, will no longer be the norm. Reese, though, is okay with all of that. ‘I want to start at the bottom again,’ she says. ‘I want to be a rookie again and build myself back up; I want to be knocked down and learn and grow at the next level.’

Reese is also keenly aware of how competitive that next level is. There are just 144 spots across 12 teams in the WNBA, with only 36 new athletes drafted into the league each season. If Reese is among those picks during the draft on April 15, as she’s predicted to be, ‘I’ll be working with grown women,’ she says. ‘I’ll be working with women that have kids, women that have a family to feed. I’m going to have to work my butt off every single day and grind. And who wouldn’t want that? I don’t want anything in my life to be easy.’”

Sounds like a very hard worker. And Angel will definitely get a chance to put her strong work ethic to use. As she strives to make a name for herself at the professional level; grow the game and reach her own personal goals.
