Amirah Boyd Becomes the Youngest NCAA Coach In History

You can never put an age limit on excellence. And Amirah Boyd has proven this to be true as she becomes the youngest NCAA coach in history. A few weeks after graduating from college and one month after turning 22, Boyd became the coach of the acrobatics and tumbling team of Caldwell University in New Jersey. Making her the youngest person to coach at the NCAA collegiate level.

The Georgia native always had an interest in tumbling which her parents noticed. They signed her up for gymnastics at the tender age of 3. She exceled in gymnastics reaching the highest level in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics program. However, due to a serious injury in high school her gymnastics trajectory was altered and she took up tumbling and acrobatics. In addition to that,  when she was 14 her coaches noticed that she possessed leadership skills. So she started coaching at her home gym. By the time she was a sophomore at Presbyterian College she was convinced that coaching should be her career. She even switched her major from biology to athletic coaching.

The acrobatics and tumbling team at Caldwell is only in its second year and already Boyd has accomplished greatness. On February 24th she led her team to its first victory against Stevenson University. Not only was it the first win for Caldwell’s acrobatics and tumbling team. But it was the first win for the entire state of New Jersey for any acrobatics and tumbling program. But despite her early success she knows there are many challenges she will have to overcome.

In an exclusive interview with Because of Them We Can Boyd had this to say:

“The biggest challenge has just been people taking me seriously. Not only because I am Black, but also because I am a female, and I’m 22 years old. So, I kind of have like three things working against me. But, I know what I’m doing. The fact that I’m young or the fact that I am a woman or whatever, like that has nothing to do with anything. I’m in this position for a reason.”

Nevertheless, the future appears to hold more excellence and success for Boyd and her athletes. No doubt her example will inspire other young women to pursue coaching careers.
