Ahead Of The US Open Coco Gauff Has Made Decision To Fire Her Coach Matt Daly
She’s a two-time Grand Slam champion who prevailed in the French Open back in early June. But after that she began to struggle in competition, with an early exit from Wimbledon. And failing to make the semifinals in Montreal and Cincinnati. And yet ahead of the US Open, Coco Gauff has made the decision to fire her coach, Matt Daly. However, she will continue to work with longtime coach Jean-Christophe “J.C.” Faurel. And she has brought in Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics specialist, according to ESPN.
Tennis writer Ben Rothenberg reported the news on Wednesday, just days before Gauff begins her quest to win a second title at Flushing Meadows. Daly went on to report that a shake-up like this would have been unheard of before, because Daly and Faurel coached Gauff to her second major singles title at the French Open in June. Although this is the second time that a reigning French Open champion has dropped a coach months after winning. Iga Swiatek did it when she parted with Tomasz Wiktorowski in October last year.
And speaking of Swiatek, she along with Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will be in a a three-way battle for the No. 1 spot in the WTA Rankings at the US Open. Currently, Sabalenka holds the No. 1 spot followed by Swiatek who recently overtook Gauff, dropping her to No. 3. The US Open gets underway on August 24 with the next rankings update taking place after the tournament on September 8.
Sabalenka needs to reach at least the quarter-final to deny Swiatek and Gauff the chance to become No. 1 in the world. Swiatek can only return to No. 1 if she wins the title and Sabalenka loses before the last four. The same goes for Gauff, she can only become world No. 1 if she wins the title and Sabalenka loses before the quarter-final. So it goes without saying that this US Open has serious ranking implications.

So the questions are will this coaching change help Gauff win her second US Open? And will Gavin MacMillan have an immediate impact on her serve? MacMillan previously worked with Sabalenka who credited him with helping her with her serve. Serves have been an issue for Gauff this summer as evidenced by the 42 double faults during her three matches at the Canadian Open earlier this month.
But prior to the beginning of the US Open on Sunday, Gauff is expected to first play in an exhibition event Thursday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Then we will see if daring to fire her coach will work out for the best. At any rate, we can’t help but to cheer her on!
