Many Cowboys’ fans were unhappy with losing their top pass rusher. It was expected that a deal would get done but that didn’t materialize. However, after trading Micah Parsons to Green Bay the Dallas Cowboys signed cornerback DaRon Bland to a contract extension. The team had been in negotiations with Bland prior to the Parsons trade. So that had no bearing on the deal that was worked out with Bland.

The team posted about the deal on social media but didn’t disclose the details of the contract. Nevertheless, NFL Content Producer Bobby Kownack wrote more about the deal:

“The Cowboys agreed to terms with cornerback DaRon Bland on a four-year, $92 million contract extension that includes $50 million guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday. The team announced Bland’s deal shortly after. Bland’s average annual salary of $23 million makes him the sixth-highest-paid cornerback in the league.”

Bland made a good start in the NFL after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. That season he played in 17 games and started 8 of them. He put up a combined 54 tackles, 7 passes defensed and 5 interceptions. In his rookie season he helped the Cowboys earn a wild card playoff spot and started in his first playoff game. In the game he racked up seven combined tackles (three solo) during a 31–14 victory at the Tampa Bay Bucccaneers in the NFC Wildcard Game.

But in 2023 he had a defensive explosion while making NFL history with five interceptions returned for a touchdown, the most ever. It’s no wonder that he became a one-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro from his nine-interception 2023 campaign.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer is thrilled to have Bland under contract at least through 2029. He praised Bland’s abilities stating:

“He does have incredible ball skills, but I also think he’s got incredible instincts,” coach Brian Schottenheimer said Sunday. “His ability to study the game and his knowledge of the game for a young player, relatively young, are uncanny. Like his ability to read splits and anticipate routes and things like that, I always think of Stephon Gilmore. … Those guys as they get older, and they maybe lose a little bit of a step or something so they have to learn how to read splits and things like that, but DaRon’s just always had the ability to process things very quickly.”

Schottenheimer went on to describe the type of person and player that Bland is saying:

“I’m so happy for him,” head coach Brian Schottenheimer said of Bland. “Just the way he’s worked. Shot onto the scene a couple years ago and made an immediate impact as a rookie playing nickel and doing things like that. To see him a couple years after that with all the pick-sixes. I’m so happy for him and his family. … He’s such a humble young man. But so well-deserved. He’s one of those guys that you love him as a teammate, you love him as a competitor. Doesn’t say much, but, man, he gives you everything he’s got.”

DaRon Bland Gets The Contract Extension He Wanted

Bland had wanted the deal done before the start of the season. And it happened with only four days left before it starts on Thursday Sept. 4. Bland is looking to bounce back after dealing with a stress fracture injury last season. And his versatility will come into play as he has been playing in the slot and on the outside. “I feel like I’m pretty adjusted into it now…” Bland said when asked about playing in the slot and outside. “It’s really just gelling everything together both inside and outside and showing I can do both.”

Being flexible that way will be helpful to the cornerback room that has been hit with the injury bug. But the Cowboys now have an important part of their secondary locked up. So congratulations to DaRon on getting his extension!
