After Tense Set Coco Gauff Could Move On To Quarterfinals In 2025 French Open At Roland-Garros
As one fan said, she is playing with more and more confidence with every match. After handily beating Marie Bouzkova 6-1 in the first set things went a little sideways with the second set. However, being the fighter that she is she was able to claw her way back into the competition. And so after a tense set Coco Gauff could move on to the quarterfinals in the 2025 French open being held at Roland-Garros stadium.
There is some history between Gauff and her opponent, Bouzkova; Gauff had lost her two previous meetings to her. So that may be why Gauff came out fired up in the first set which she won without breaking a sweat in 30 minutes. However, the tide changed in the second set with Gauff fighting for her life to hang on. She was merely two points from dropping the second set, before getting back in the right direction.
The 75-minute second set was a struggle that included eight breaks of serve in a row. Meaning Gauff found herself having difficulties holding serve. Regardless, she didn’t let Bouzkova expand her lead but chose to attack her game in a variety of ways. She used the forehand, producing penetrating depth against the second serve. She used the backhand, taking it down the line as a surprise tactic.
Regarding her play in the game Gauff commented:
“Obviously,” Gauff said, “I can do some things better.”
“I served a bit more aggressive in the first set, so I was holding easier, and maybe got a little bit too passive on the serve in the second, and it allowed her to get back into the match,” Gauff said. “Just keeping the aggressive mindset is something that I can do better for the next match.”

In addition to Coco’s success at the French Open, several other Americans are also having the same experience. Four American women are on to the fourth round: No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 7 Madison Keys, No. 16 Amanda Anisimova and unseeded Hailey Baptiste. And there are three U.S. men still in the bracket heading into Sunday. Typically Americans don’t fare well at the French Open so this kind of success is unprecedented.
Anisimova will play No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the quarterfinals. While Pegula will face French wild-card entry Lois Boisson. Meanwhile Gauff will have a matchup on Monday against No. 20 Ekaterina Alexandrova, with the winner moving onto the quarterfinals.
