After Steelers Win Over Commanders Mike Tomlin is 26-6 Against Rookie Quarterbacks

He takes much criticism every year. However, this season many negative voices are suddenly getting quieter. Pittsburgh’s head coach has been making decisions that has the organization in a good position to fight for a playoff spot with a record of 7-2. And on Sunday he impressed even more; after a Steelers win over Commanders Mike Tomlin is 26-6 against rookie quarterbacks.

What a stat. Trey Wingo took to social media platform X, to really help put this record into perspective. He states,

“The Steelers and Mike Tomlin do what is necessary. That’s 8 straight wins coming off a bye… and Tomlin improves to 26-6 when facing a rookie QB. That’s a winning % of 81… 3rd highest in NFL history.”

CBS sports producer Jeremiah Miller adds, “Have to give Mike Tomlin so much credit for going with Russell Wilson after Justin Fields started 4-2. A lot of people were against the move, but the Steelers are 3-0 with Wilson and the offense looks legitimate for the first time since 2018. Mike Tomlin deserves some flowers.

Interestingly, Bill Belichick who for years was hailed for his coaching philosophy and prowess. Was well documented for his success against rookies. So then, how does Tomlin compare? As mentioned, Mike Tomlin 26-6. That beats Belichick’s record of 22-7, but should be noted this is a record which took some hits in his final seasons as the Patriots coach.

Nevertheless, the rookie that the Steelers faced on Sunday wasn’t just any rookie. The Commanders’ Jayden Daniels has been absolutely lights out. Transforming the Washington team overnight. With Daniels at the helm of the offense the Commanders have a record of 7-3. Already a far cry from the previous season’s 4-13.

But Tomlin’s experience still played a vital role in the Steelers win. The game was CLOSE. So the talent on both sides is clearly evident. But Coach Tomlin was able to get the Commanders to jump offsides. A move that he has used throughout his tenure. Experience matters.

Furthermore, due to his veteran decision making, Tomlin has the Steelers in good shape. Pittsburgh is still in first place of the AFC North and the team has a .778 winning percentage this season. Although, there’s a nice amount of season left, what Tomlin has done so far can’t be ignored.
