After Short Tenure Las Vegas Raiders Released DT Christian Wilkins With Injury Concerns
He was one of the highly valuable free agents on the market last year. And the team was quick to move in and scoop him up. But all’s well didn’t end well in this case. Last evening an announcement was made on the team’s website. So after a short tenure the Las Vegas Raiders released DT Christian Wilkins with injury concerns. They released the following statement last evening regarding the transaction:
We have decided that it is in the best interests of the organization to move on from Christian Wilkins and he has been informed of his release from the team. This franchise has a Commitment to Excellence on and off the field. With no clear path or plan for future return to play from Christian, this transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward and prepare for the new season.
That decision was confirmed after practice today by head coach Pete Carroll who had the following comment:
“We took a long time to make our decision,” Carroll said. “We watched our way through the whole thing. We’re keeping it really clear with what we said, I think there was no clear path to his return and so we just had to move on.”
Wilkins spent the first five years of his career with the Miami Dolphins and was signed by the Raiders in 2024. However, in the fifth game of the season against the Broncos, Wilkins went down with a fractured foot. He was out for the rest of the season, and was placed on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp. The team wanted Wilkins to have surgery but after getting multiple opinions he elected not to do so. Which is what led the Raiders to conclude there was no path for a future return to play for him.

However, that conclusion has not ended the relationship just yet. As reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, “A stunner: The #Raiders are releasing standout DT Christian Wilkins, the former prize of free agency after just one season of a four-year, $110M deal, sources say. Wilkins, who has been dealing with a serious foot injury, is on the books for $57.5M fully guaranteed.” He went on to report that, “The #Raiders are attempting to void $35.25M in remaining guarantees. A grievance was filed to fight it, on Wilkins’ behalf.”
Obviously the Raiders want to free themselves of the financial obligation to Wilkins. And just as equally, Wilkins wants to collect the money he signed up for in his contract. So we’ll have to see what transpires going forward. Welcome to the 2025 NFL season!
