After Major Collision Between TJ Friedl And Elly De La Cruz Reds’ Injuries Piling Up

It’s always scary when two guys running full speed slam into each other. And this past Tuesday we got to see it happen at the Great American Ball Park. The Cincinnati Reds were hosting the Chicago White Sox when the center fielder and shortstop both were chasing a fly ball. Running full speed the center fielder slid right into the shortstop, popping up into the air and landing on his right wrist. Now after that major collision between TJ Friedl and Elly De La Cruz the Cincinnati Reds’ injuries are piling up.

But to make matters worse, prior to the collision in the fourth inning, Friedl had been hit by a pitch on his left foreman in the bottom of the third. Not to mention the fact that Friedl got cleated on the inside of his thigh in the collision. However, Friedl took the blame for the collision stating:

“I called it about halfway there,” he said. “There’s no way he heard me. He’s going after it, and I should have called it at the last second when I started my dive. I just made a decision to dive a little too late to speak up.

“Our infielders are taught to go get the ball until they’re called off, and from where I called, I’m sure he maybe didn’t hear me. And Elly’s going to get every ball he can, which is why he is the way he is. His range is incredible.”

So the plan was to have an MRI and go from there. Today Terry Francona provided an update saying:

“He was just available to pinch run or go in for defense (yesterday). It’s more likely the same today. He’s going to grab a bat again and see how he feels. We’re trying to target tomorrow. That’s the hope.”

But that’s not good news as far as Reds’ fans are concerned. This same kind of issue happened with Austin Hays (hamstring) and Jeimer Candelario (back). Both players were off the starting lineup for a game or two before landing on the IL a few days later. But for now the Reds are hoping that Friedl is full-go by Friday’s series opener against the Cleveland Guardians.

Currently the Reds are without Candelario, Noelvi Marte, Austin Callihan, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Jake Fraley. If Friedl lands on the IL they may have to recall Jacob Hurtubise or Blake Dunn. In the meantime, Gavin Lux is taking over as the Reds leadoff hitter, while Benson mans center field. Here’s hoping Friedl does make a quick recovery!
