After Firing Head Coach Tom Thibodeau Knicks Being Denied Interview Requests

It came as a shock to some people when the basketball team decided to fire their head coach. Especially after he had guided them to their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 seasons. Not to mention turned them into a franchise with a winning identity. Nevertheless, after firing head coach Tom Thibodeau, the New York Knicks are being denied interview requests by other NBA teams. According to reports, multiple teams have denied their requests to interview the other teams’ coaches.

ESPN Insider Shams Charania provided some details about some of the denials. On Tuesday he posted the following:

“The New York Knicks requested permission to speak to Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch and Houston Rockets coach Ime Udoka for their head coaching job, but were denied on both, sources tell ESPN. Knicks could request permission for other current head coaches too.”

Then on Wednesday he followed up with an update on the situation, posting:

“The New York Knicks requested permission Wednesday morning to speak to Mavericks coach Jason Kidd – and Dallas gave a firm rejection, sources tell ESPN. Knicks have been denied now on Kidd, Minnesota’s Chris Finch and Houston’s Ime Udoka.”

On that same Wednesday there was another update to the unfolding drama, Charania posted:

“Another one: The New York Knicks have requested permission to speak with Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder, but were firmly denied, sources tell ESPN.”

Ouch, that’s four denials in rapid succession. Getting turned down that much in no uncertain terms leads one to wonder if the Knicks had a plan after firing their head coach. All indications point to no and sports analyst Charles Barkley succinctly expressed his feelings on the matter. “The Knicks have to be the damn stupidest people in the world,” TNT’s Charles Barkley said before Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday.

Providing more context on what is going on with the Knicks Yahoo Sports reporter Vincent Goodwill reported:

“(Knicks owner James) Dolan and team president Leon Rose held exit meetings with key Knicks players and the complaints were clear. Dolan, whom sources said was never a huge Thibodeau fan through the years, asked the questions in the meeting while Rose took a secondary role.”

Somebody (or multiple somebodies) convinced Dolan that firing a successful coach with three years and $30 million was necessary.

Whether the owner wanted Thibodeau gone or not, there should have been a plan in place to replace him. But given the number of rejections they have received, there apparently wasn’t one. No coach is perfect, but if a team has a winning coach then they may want to keep him. So what will the Knicks do now? We have no idea but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled and you updated.
