After Embarrassing Loss Chicago Bears Fire Head Coach

They had a very good chance to at least tie if not win the game yesterday. But for some reason a timeout was not taken and the game clock expired. It was the sixth-straight loss for the Bears who sit at 4-8 on the season. So after that embarrassing loss on Thursday the Chicago Bears made the decision to fire their head coach. The Bears announced Friday that Matt Eberflus has been relieved of his duties as head coach. Thomas Brown has been elevated to interim head coach. They released the following statement:

“This morning, after meeting with [chairman] George [H. McCaskey] and [President and CEO] Kevin [Warren], we informed Matt of our decision to move in a different direction with the leadership of our football team and the head-coaching position,” said Bears general manager Ryan Poles. “I thank Matt for his hard work, professionalism and dedication to our organization. We extend our gratitude for his commitment to the Chicago Bears and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”

“I support Ryan and the decision that was made this morning. We understand how imperative the head-coaching role is for building and maintaining a championship-caliber team, leading our players and our organization,” said Warren. “Our fans have stood by us and persevered through every challenge, and they deserve better results. Our organizational and operational structure is strong, focused, aligned and energized for the future.”

Eberflus held his press conference this morning and for him it was business as usual. But about two hours later he was advised of the decision to release him.

His comments indicated that he thought he would still be with the team for their next game:

“I’m just going to be working on finishing up this game, doing a good job of evaluating that, our after-action report like we always do,” he said. “And then I’ll be working into San Francisco. Again, those are conversations we’ll have, and again I’m confident I’ll be working on to San Francisco and getting ready for that game.”

As for interim coach Thomas Brown, has led the Bears offense for each of the last three weeks. A unit that has totaled a league-high 22 third-down conversions and has scored 46 second-half points. Third most in the NFL, since Week 11. He joined the Bears in 2024 as offensive passing game coordinator.

For the first time in the franchise’s history the Bears have relieved a coach of his duties midseason. Eberlus was in his third season with the team and leaves with a 14-32 record. So far this season Eberflus marks the third head coach fired in the league.
