After Being Benched Is It The End Of The Road For Quarterback Russell Wilson?

He’s a 36-year old, 14-year veteran of the NFL. And he’s earned plenty of accolades including being a 10-time Pro Bowler. But after Week 3 he lost the starting job to a rookie. So after being benched is it the end of the road for quarterback Russell Wilson? According to Wilson, he says, no. To be more precise he said, “I’m not done.” And he might be right about that. Wilson could become a trade candidate for a team that desperately needs a quarterback.

Perhaps the Cincinnati Bengals could be interested in trading for the former Super Bowl champion. With their own franchise quarterback being out for the next three months, a veteran like Wilson may be just what they need to get into playoff contention. Joe Burrow underwent surgery on his toe and likely won’t return until the end of the season. So they will need someone who can help them get some wins. However, backup quarterback Jake Browning currently has the team at 2-1.

Nevertheless, if Wilson is not traded he fully intends to be a mentor to Jaxson Dart. He said, “I know that I’m going to respond in the right way every day.” Dart is the rookie quarterback who now has the starting job. Dart will make his first NFL start this Sunday in the New York Giants’ Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Chargers at MetLife Stadium. The Giants are hoping he can deliver their first win of the season. However, that’s a big ask considering the Chargers have played well so far this season. They rank fourth in scoring defense and third in opponent passer rating.

Besides Wilson, the Giants also have Jameis Winston on the roster. So if need be they could afford to trade Wilson to another team while still having an experienced veteran on the roster. Which is likely what Dart will need as he begins his NFL career.

But head coach Brian Daboll is confident with his decision to bench Wilson in favor of Dart. He said that Dart has the “right makeup and athleticism” to be a starter. No rookie is ever “just ready” to play, but Dart has done enough to show that he can go out there and compete. “I expect him to prepare, I expect him to go out here and get better each time he plays. It’s not always going to be perfect.”

Whatever happens, Wilson intends to serve in some capacity in the NFL.
