After 25 Years Charles Barkley is Retiring From NBA Commentating; He Explains Real Reason

A lot of us grew up seeing this man on TV. We looked forward to hearing his knowledge and thoughts on the game, his jokes as well as humor and ability to effortlessly hop into any broadcast team and make the show memorable. It is sad to lose a pillar of NBA broadcasting but all things eventually come to an end. After 25 years Charles Barkley is retiring from NBA commentating and he’s opening up about the real reason for waving goodbye.

But seriously… What an end to an era! While female sports fans in San Antonio are probably celebrating. We still can’t help to think of the impact Barkley has made on the court and in TV.

For over two decades Charles has been a mainstay and constant. Basketball fans could always count on Barkley being there before and after games. Providing insights and entertainment value.

However, with TNT not maintaining as tight of a grip on the NBA with a media deal. It’s left Barkley’s popular Inside the NBA show out in the cold. While TNT still has a small window to make a move; currently it looks as though the NBA is moving forward with NBC, Peacock, Amazon and ABC/ESPN. Therefore, the NBA Hall of Famer, 61, announced last month that the upcoming NBA season will be his final year behind the desk on TNT’s Inside the NBA.

Furthermore, Barkley is also explaining the reasons why he is calling it quits since it is a tad surprising. He’s got fans and probably easily could go to another network and get a show going. However, this is how Charles feels about the whole situation; he says,

“I wouldn’t feel comfortable going to work for another network. It’ll be 25 years that I’ve been working with Turner, and I love everybody at Turner. But at this age, to go over and start over, I don’t know if I want to do that.

[Also] If I don’t have enough money by now, I’m the biggest idiot fool in the world.

I really feel bad for everybody at TNT — all the people I’ve been working with for the last 24 years, they’re like family to me. I honestly, in my heart, I think we have lost the package. That’s my honest opinion. But I really hope we get a last-minute reprieve for the people at Turner.”

Well, anything can happen. But TNT will have to act fast in order to stay in the mix. The Atlanta-based network has five days to match the new $76 billion deal.
