AFC West Rivals Chargers And Raiders Closed Out Monday Night Football Doubleheader

Their opening drive was a dagger to the heart of Raiders fans as the game opened up with an interception. Which gave the Chargers a short field and a 38 yard field goal. While the Raiders stumbled out of the gate the Chargers smoothly went about their business. And so the AFC West rivals Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders closed out the Monday Night Football doubleheader. But it would turn out to be a difficult night for the Raiders.

After that opening interception, the Raiders fought their way back with a 12 drive play that ended with a 54 yard field goal. The Chargers had to punt on their next possession in part due to quarterback Justin Herbert not being able to connect with wide receiver Quentin Johnston. Ashton Jeanty got stuffed by the Chargers defense and the completed passes were for short gain so the Raiders punted. However, the Chargers successfully ran the ball on their next drive which ended with Keenan Allen catching a 10 yard touchdown pass.

In the second quarter the Raiders went on a 14 play drive but only came away with a 40 yard field goal. But the second quarter wasn’t good to the Raiders. They had a punt and another interception. Meanwhile the Chargers punted but prior to the Raiders interception they went on a six play 91 yard drive that concluded with a 60 yard pass to Johnston for the touchdown. Quarterback Geno Smith was harassed throughout the first half. And he couldn’t connect on a lot of his passes. So the Chargers had the 17-6 lead at the halftime.

Khalil Mack left the game with an arm injury. He was later seen on the Chargers’ sideline out of uniform with a large sling on his arm.

The Chargers opened the second half with a long drive that took up half of the third quarter. But they only had a 20 yard field goal for all their efforts. In response the Raiders went on a 22 play 67 yard drive that only yielded a 37 yard field goal after about 11 minutes.

In the fourth quarter there were three turnovers on downs, two by the Raiders and one by the Chargers. A pass intended for Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers ricocheted off Donte Jackson and landed in the hands of Derwin James. However, the Raiders had a chance to get back into the game when their defense forced a fumble. But the disconnect between Smith and his receivers continued in the second half. Either no one was open or they were being overthrown. On their final possession it came down to 4th and 6 and the pass was incomplete. Chargers kneeled on the ball for the 20-9 win.

This will be the third time in a row that the Raiders have lost to the Chargers by double digits. But for what it’s worth they are one game ahead of their other rivals the Kansas City Chiefs.
