Adam Thielen’s Request For Release Granted By Minnesota Vikings

He is a native of Minnesota and had spent the majority of his NFL career there. However, he spent two years with the Carolina Panthers who traded him back to the Vikings this past offseason. But in a strange twist of fate he is now leaving the land of lakes. Adam Thielen’s request for a release has been granted by the Minnesota Vikings.

Thielen was selected by the Vikings in 2014 and spent his career there until 2022. After that he spent two years with the Carolina Panthers from 2023-2024. But the Vikings had a need in the wide receiver department knowing Jordan Addison would miss the first three games of the 2025 season. Therefore, the Vikings traded with the Panthers to get Thielen back for 2025. They received a conditional 2026 seventh-round selection and a 2027 fifth-round selection in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round selection.

Right now the Vikings are sitting at 4-8 after a shutout loss to the Seattle Seahawks yesterday. Prompting Thielen to request a release to go play for a contending team. Because it comes after the trade deadline has passed he will have to go through the waiver process in which another team can claim him. If he goes unclaimed, he will be cleared to sign with any team.

Speaking on Thielen’s request general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah made the following statement:

“Last week, Adam’s representation approached the team and asked if we would be willing to release Adam, expressing his desire to play a bigger role in the remaining weeks of what he has indicated will be his final NFL season,” general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said in a statement. “Following discussions through the weekend and out of respect for Adam, we have agreed to give him the opportunity to pursue more playing time elsewhere. Adam is one of the all-time great Vikings, and we wish him and his family continued success.”

Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the release during his Monday morning press conference, stating in part:

“I just wish him nothing but the best over these final few weeks of the year. And it sounds like that might be the final few weeks of his career. And we wanted to make sure, after some dialog and things, that we accommodated that.”

Thielen himself confirmed his wish to play for a contender in his Instagram post. Part of what he said was, “Since this past Spring, I knew this was going to be my last season playing in the National Football League. Given that, the Vikings allowed me the opportunity to go compete elsewhere for the last few weeks of my career.”

So far Thielen has caught eight passes for 69 yards on 18 targets with a long of 19 and started four of 11 games. He needs seven more catches to reach 700 receptions in his career. But he was inactive on Sunday when Minnesota visited Seattle. We sincerely hope Thielen will get his wish to play for a contender and maybe even get a Super Bowl ring!
