The Washington Commanders are scheduled to open their new stadium, to be built at the RFK Stadium site, in 2030. Construction is planned to start in 2026 after the demolition of the old stadium is completed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that, “President Donald Trump wants the Washington Commanders to name their planned $3.7 billion stadium after him, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.”
In case you forgot, as we detailed back in April, the Washington Commanders team plans to contribute at least $2.5 billion to build a beautiful new stadium. While the District all provides up to $850 million. Furthermore, Mark Segraves, of NBC Washington had this to add, “DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and Commanders have framework for a more than $3 Billion deal to bring the team to DC and build new stadium at RFK campus in time for 2030 NFL season.

So then, a lot is in the works for Washington. Which is great for the players and their fans. Nevertheless, on Saturday Commanders insider and reporter, Nicki Jhabvala for The Athletic added,

“A Commanders spokesperson declined to comment on ESPN’s report about Trump wanting their new stadium to be named after him. Per team source, the Commanders anticipate potential conversations with Trump about their new stadium when he attends Sunday’s game, but so far, no formal request has been made to team ownership about naming the stadium after him.”

Yes, the President will be in attendance for Washington’s game on Sunday. Commanders president, Mark Clouse, released a statement on President Donald Trump’s expected attendance at Sunday’s game against the Lions. Clouse says,

“We are honored to welcome President Trump to the game as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country. The entire Commanders organization is proud to participate in the NFL’s league-wide Salute to Service initiative, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, active-duty service members, and their families this Sunday.”

Nicki Jhabvala finished Saturday’s updated report by mentioning, “Donald Trump will be the first U.S. president to attend an NFL game at Northwest Stadium. He will sit in the owners’ box with Josh Harris. [In reference to players] the Commanders had already ruled out Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin. They [also have] listed three others as questionable for Sunday.” The latter is definitely pertinent intel for fantasy owners.
