Aces A’ja Wilson Will Not Participate in Inaugural Season of Unrivaled

Not going to lie, we are a bit disappointed with this decision, but there is always next season. On Thursday, it was confirmed that the Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson will not participate in the inaugural season of Unrivaled. The 3×3 league is still looking to fill two last spots.

Wilson had a killer 2024 season in the WNBA. Not only did she do her part to help the Aces make it back to the playoffs. But she made plenty of history in the process. Such as when A’ja broke the WNBA Single-Season Scoring Record. In 2024, Wilson surpassed Jewell Loyd’s 2023 record of 939 points when she boosted her season total to 956.

Therefore, lending her scoring talent to the new league could have helped give it a nice initial boost. However, A’ja is not the only big player that fans will have to do without seeing on the Unrivaled courts. Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark has also declined the opportunity. Yet, both of these players if they ever changed their minds would most definitely be welcomed with open arms in the future by the Unrivaled league.

Nevertheless, Unrivaled’s success thus far cannot be underestimated or ignored. The social media accounts have been doing steady numbers with most posts having thousands of likes and other interactions. Additionally, ticket sales are looking pretty promising thus far as well.

The new league announced that on Wednesday that they completely sold out their first round of presale tickets. And they did so with rapid fire. All reports confirm that in less than half an hour all tickets were GONE.

This is a very good start for the league. And a very good sign in terms of there being real interest in fans wanting to see this type of competition style in women’s basketball. The league is just weeks from starting, and playing game one; so this is definitely a good lead up of excitement.

Moreover, what is also thrilling is that these games will be easier for basketball enthusiasts to watch. Unrivaled secured a media deal with Warner Bros Discovery. WBD had this to say regarding broadcasting,

“TNT Sports and professional women’s basketball league Unrivaled have reached a multi-year media rights partnership to exclusively present live game coverage on TNT and truTV – along with all games being streamed on Max – beginning with the league’s inaugural season. The agreement will feature more than 45 primetime regular season matchups three nights a week across TNT Sports platforms, with twice-weekly games on TNT as the lead network on Mondays and Fridays and additional broadcasts on truTV on Saturdays. Unrivaled live game action will tip off January 17, 2025.

As part of the media rights partnership, TNT Sports has agreed to invest an undisclosed amount in Unrivaled.”

Nice. So right now the new league looks to be in good shape. And it is proving to be an awesome opportunity for WNBA women ballers to play and make more income instead of having to go overseas to work.
