Aaron Judge’s Home Run Denied By MLB At Ray’s Temporary Stadium

We know how devastating hurricanes can be and that their impact can last for months or even years. Last October Hurricane Milton did horrific damage to the Tampa Bay Rays Tropicana Field. It was so damaged that the Rays had to find a new place to call home while they sort out the situation. Today, Milton continued to make his impact felt in a game between the Yankees and Rays. Aaron Judge’s home run was denied by the MLB at the Ray’s temporary stadium. But only because the foul poles are not high enough at George Steinbrenner Field.

George Steinbrenner Field is a minor league park that is the spring training home of the New York Yankees. And the home of their affiliate team the Tampa Tarpons in the Florida State League. After the hurricane, the Yankees graciously offered the use of the field to the Rays for their 2025 season. So it’s rather unfortunate that this foul incident happened to Judge and his New York Yankees team.

Apparently, no one thought to check to make sure that George Steinbrenner Field met the standards for an MLB game. On Sunday the realization hit that the foul poles at George Steinbrenner Field aren’t nearly as high as the foul polls in MLB stadiums. And that’s how the erroneous foul call came to be a point of contention. As Sports Illustrated described it:

“Despite review clearly showing that Judge’s moonshot was well within the confines of the foul poll, the call on the field stood and Judge lost out on adding another tally to his ever growing home run total. Instead of having a homer on his statistical record, Judge wound up striking out and a furious Aaron Boone (manager) was ejected as a result.”

Prior to that egregious action, there was a scorekeeping decision that changed an error to a hit. Thereby, depriving star ace, Max Fried, of a no-hitter.

But despite having a home run stricken from his record, Judge kept his cool. MLB reporter Bryan Hoch posted Judge’s response:

Aaron Judge on his home run that wasn’t: “I think everybody is kind of scratching their head, but [there’s] nothing I can do about it. They missed it, and I’ve just got to move on.”

Fortunately, for the Yankees, the two unfavorable calls didn’t cost them a win. They went on to beat the Rays to the tune of 4-0. However, this leaves the question of what will be done to prevent the negated home run from happening again. If nothing is done, this could be a very long season for Rays’ opponents.
