There’s no crying in baseball! And there is no shame in celebrating one of the best sports movies ever made either. A League of Their Own premieres 32 years ago today on July 1, 1992.
A film that’s just a smidge over 2 hours. And was put together with a modest budget of $40 million. At the box office it would go on to be a major hit and success; grossing $132 million. By today’s standards, that would put this film closer to the $300 million range. Not bad for a movie based on women’s sports.
A League of Their Own is an American sports comedy drama film directed by Penny Marshall that tells a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). It stars the legendary Tom Hanks, the gorgeous Geena Davis, a dancing and hilarious Madonna, Lori Petty, Jon Lovitz, David Strathairn, Garry Marshall and Bill Pullman. A brilliant piece of cinema that transcends generations. Furthermore, in 2012, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant“.

In light of the film turning 32, the Baseball Hall of Fame shared a statement by Jennie Finch. Finch is a 2x Olympic softball pitcher who also has a gold medal to show for it. Regarding the effect A League of Their Own had on her and many other young girls Finch says,
“For me, that movie was such an inspiration of hope and dreams and hearing the stories of these women and what they’ve overcome and the barriers they’ve broken. Just that they were able to play the game and play the game in front of fans and have an opportunity that we didn’t have before. That was a huge inspiration for me and the hope for women in sport, and women in softball; especially in baseball.”
Yes, young women seeing other women achieve greatness and “impossible” feats can have a major impact and influence on their lives. Even today we are seeing girls wanting to be like Simone Biles, Alex Morgan, Caitlin Clark, Katie Ledecky, Sha’Carri Richardson and Angel Reese. Stories like A League of Their Own are important.
