A Few Thoughts On The Thursday Night Preseason Week 3 Games

First of all Caleb Williams of the Bears and Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs did not play. Actually most of the Chiefs and Bears starting players were on the sideline. So here are a few thoughts on the Thursday Night Preseason Week 3 Games starting with the Bears vs Chiefs. Taylor Bagent solidified his position as the No. 2 quarterback for the Bears. Thanks in part to his efforts the Bears finished the preseason a perfect 4-0. Last night they were better than the Chiefs on offense and defense.

In addition to having trouble running the ball the Chiefs were also plagued with penalties. It wasn’t all bad for the Chiefs, backup quarterback Chris Oladokun had a few nice passes in the first half. But he also had two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six.

But the real bright spot for the Chiefs was rookie tailback Carson Steele, an undrafted free agent. He ran hard and he ran over the Bears defenders. He was reminiscent of John “the diesel” Riggins. At one point it looked as if Steele had punched the ball into the end zone but he was ruled out at the one-yard line. Not that it mattered because on the next play he rammed it into the end zone for the touchdown. I got a feeling he will be making the roster.

For the Bears, they seem to be pretty solid at quarterback. After Bagent led his two drives, Brett Brett Rypien came in and did work. He had a couple of completions that got the Bears into field goal range. Ultimately, they scored on a 32-yard field goal putting the Bears up 10-0. The Chiefs mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late losing 34-21.

A Few Thoughts On The Thursday Night Preseason Week 3 Games

The other Thursday game was Colts vs Bengals. The Bengals backup defense played against the Colts starters and did an excellent job. Although the Colts did put together an 80 yard drive to score a touchdown on the opening drive. After that the Bengals shut down quarterback Anthony Richardson on his last four drives. There was safety Jordan Battle’s pick-six, two three-and-outs and a sack.

When the Colts backup’s came in the Bengals defense continued to harass them too. They forced three incompletions by QB 3 Sam Ehlinger from their own 3 the last three plays of the first half to keep the score 7-7. At any rate, the Colts’ first-team defense was going against a bunch of Bengals backups. And that’s likely why the Colts won the game 27-14. However, the Colts are happy with what they saw from Richardson, their quarterback. According to head coach Shane Steichen:

“It has been great to see his growth more than anything,” Steichen said of Richardson. “Getting in the OTAs, going into training camp, getting that series in the first preseason game, then getting out there and playing a good amount tonight — it was great. Again, excited. We’re 17 days away from Houston, so we’ve got some work to do before we get there, but we’re fired up for it.”

Colts Rookie Laiatu Latu recorded his first professional sack. Latu being paired up with DeForest Buckner to rush the passer could be a real headache for offenses. Looking forward to watching them.

Other News On The Week 3 Preseason

In terms of injuries, offensive lineman Wanya Morris left Thursday’s game early with a knee injury. Fortunately, Coach Reid reported after the game that Morris’ injury wasn’t serious.

Cornerback Douglas Coleman was immobilized on a stretcher and taken from Arrowhead Stadium in an ambulance on Thursday night after tackling the Chiefs’ Cornell Powell on the first play of the second half. He was released from a Kansas City hospital and returned to Chicago on Friday. “He was walking around,” Bears coach Matt Eberflus told Chicago radio station WSCR “670 The Score.” “I did talk to him. He’s in good spirits.”

So it looks like both teams may have dodged the injury bug.
