A Few Quick Thoughts On NFL Week 1 Sunday Action

A Few Quick Thoughts On NFL Week 1 Sunday Action

There are always lots of things that happen throughout the course of an NFL game. Rather than try to cover everything in every game I’ll offer a few quick thoughts on NFL Week 1 Sunday action. So following are a few tidbits that I found interesting.

Pittsburgh @ Atlanta – Justin Fields filled in capably for Russell Wilson. The Pittsburgh defense made life very uncomfortable for Kirk Cousins. Cousins threw a couple of uncharacteristic interceptions.

Arizona @ Buffalo – The NFL changed the kickoff rules as we know. They refer to the new rules as the “dynamic kickoff.” Arizona’s running back DeeJay Dallas became the first player to return one of the special kickoffs for a 96-yard touchdown. But it wasn’t enough to overcome Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

Tennessee @ Chicago – Everyone was waiting to see Caleb Williams play. But his performance was just so-so. Which is to be expected for a rookie in spite of the huge expectations for him. However, the Bears defense generated three takeaways, all in the fourth quarter. The Bears stormed back from a 17-0 deficit to stun the Titans 24-17.

New England @ Cincinnati – Under new head coach Jerod Mayo, New England got their first week 1 win since 2020. Their defense was stout and the o-line played better than advertised. As for the Bengals they got off to a slow start last season and look to be doing the same this year. But it’s much too early for Bengals fans to panic. I wonder if they miss Joe Mixon.

A Few Quick Thoughts On NFL Week 1 Sunday Action

Houston @ Indianapolis – Speaking of Joe Mixon, he had himself a day playing for the Texans. He put up 159 yards rushing and his first touchdown as a Texan. The Colts had not allowed a 150-yard rusher in their previous 56 games. However, QB Anthony Richardson’s playmaking ability kept the team in the game. His 60-yard strike to Alec Pierce was amazing.

Jacksonville @ Miami – Despite being arrested minutes away from Hard Rock Stadium, Tyreek Hill still did his thing. He put up 130 receiving yards and a touchdown. He used his touchdown celebration to reenact his arrest. The Dolphins held the Jaguars scoreless in the second half to get the 17-20 victory.

Carolina @ New Orleans – I don’t think anyone expected the Saints to put a beat down on the Panthers, but they did. Saints’ QB Derek Carr looked great carving up the rebuilt Panthers’ defense. It was the opposite for Panthers’ QB Bryce Young who was sacked four times. All the blame isn’t on him as they weren’t able to run the ball and there was a lot of miscommunication.

Minnesota @ NY Giants – The Giants also suffered a beatdown by the Vikings losing, 28-6. According to giants.com: “The highlight of the day was the halftime ceremony, when the Giants honored the 100 greatest players in franchise history in the kickoff to their century season.” Ouch. The Vikings were efficient in all phases of the game.

Las Vegas @ LA Chargers – The Raiders defense was stout not allowing the Chargers to score a touchdown until the 4th quarter. Their offense was 5-14 on third down conversions and had three turnovers. Not a formula for success. Credit is being given to Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh for maximizing the talent he has on the team.

NFL Week 1 Sunday Recap

Denver @ Seattle – It was a rough outing for Denver’s rookie QB Bo Nix who threw for 138 yards and 2 interceptions. Seattle CB Riq Woolen had an incredible fourth-quarter interception which kept the Broncos at bay. Although they did mount a comeback in the second half it wasn’t enough to win the game.

Dallas @ Cleveland – The Browns’ offense couldn’t find any rhythm and QB Deshaun Watson was sacked six times. And they had four straight three-and-outs. The Cowboys dominated the Browns. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb didn’t look at all rusty after not taking any preseason snaps.

Washington @ Tampa Bay – Although he had some miscues Commanders’ QB Jayden Daniel played fine for the most part. Their defense gave up too many yards, reminiscent of last season. Buccaneers’ QB Baker Mayfield had their offense working like a well-oiled machine.

More On Week 1 Sunday Games

LA Rams @ Detroit – Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp continued their dynamic duo performance for the Rams. The Rams dominated in time of possession even with not getting the ball in overtime. Detroit wasn’t Detroit until they decided to bully the Rams in overtime to win the game. They had given up a 17-3 lead in the second half. But good teams find a way to win and they did.

Wrapping up Week 1 will be New York Jets @ San Francisco 49ers. It will interesting to see how Aaron Rodgers fares in this game given what happened to him at last season’s opener.
