Who Is the Best Tight End In the NFL
The Tight End plays an important role in the offense. So who, you may wonder, is the best Tight End in the NFL. But before we get into that let’s define the tight end position. Here is the definition provided by the official NFL rule book:
A tight end lines up on the end of the offensive line outside of the tackle and acts as an extra blocker on running plays or becomes a receiver on passing situations. A standard formation uses one tight end, though some offenses call for two.
Based on this definition a tight end can be a quarterback’s best friend. He can block, he can catch, and bail his quarterback out of a bad situation. In the past some of my favorite Tight Ends were Kellen Winslow, Ozzie Newsome, Shannon Sharpe, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, and Rob Gronkowski. There are plenty of other former great Tight Ends. Feel free to add them to the list.
The same can be said for the Tight Ends currently active in the NFL. In no particular order, here are some of the best in the business:
George Kittle
Travis Kelce
T J Hockenson
Mark Andrews
David Njoku
Ranking the best of the best in any category is subjective. So don’t get your wig twisted if you don’t agree with the guys on the list. You can always make up your own rankings. Or argue with your friends, whatever you prefer.
Who Is the Best Tight End In the NFL
Generally, Tight Ends are big, tall, muscular dudes who look quite imposing. And they are imposing on the field. Some tend to be better blockers, others are better receivers. The best Tight Ends do both very well. Oftentimes a quarterback will dump off a ball to the tight end when he’s in trouble. They can also be very useful to the running back. Opening up holes and lanes for the back to run through helps move the chains.
So whether he is plowing the road, blocking a linebacker, or making a big catch, the tight end is very much needed. However, if he can do all those things well he will be a rock star for the team.
