Joe Mixon $25K Fine Rescinded By The NFL

It’s not something you see very often. So it was somewhat surprising to hear the news today. However, believe it or not Joe Mixon had a $25K fine levied against him rescinded by the NFL. It all stemmed from the Houston Texans loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the 2024 playoffs. There had been many complaints lobbed against NFL officials and how they had been officiating Chiefs’ games. Many fans felt that the Chiefs were being given preferential treatment when it came to penalties called by officials.

So when Mixon was asked for his thoughts following the divisional loss, this was what he had to say:

“everybody knows how it is playing up here.”

“You can never leave it into the refs’ hands,” Mixon said. “The whole world sees, man, what it is. When it comes down to it, you can never leave it into the refs’ hands. It’s all good, though.”

Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh wholeheartedly agreed with Mixon’s comments and added his own thoughts on the matter. On X (formerly twitter) he posted: “Why play the game if every 50/50 call goes with the Chiefs. These officials are [trash] & bias.” Unfortunately, Sports Illustrated attributed Houshmandzadeh’s comment to Mixon. And then the NFL levied the $25K fine against Mixon based on the “50/50” comment. Sports Illustrated has since corrected their error. But to make matters worse, after a couple hours the NFL reissued the fine for the comments Mixon actually made after the game.

Of course Mixon was very unhappy about the situation. “So let me get this straight, the NFL fines me 25k for something I didn’t even say,” Mixon posted to X. “Call them out for it, and their response was fine me AGAIN for something that’s not even a violation without even rescinding the first one. Where’s the accountability? Just respect the players.”

So Mixon appealed the fine and now he has received the best news that the fine was overturned. His teammate Will Anderson Jr. had also been hit with a $25K fine for commenting about the officials. However, he appealed the fine as well and his fine has also now been rescinded by the league. ESPN Texans reporter DJ Bien-Aime posted a copy of the letter Mixon received rescinding the fine. You can view his post here.

I’m glad both players had their fines rescinded. However, with so many people believing that there was a conspiracy to rig games for the Chiefs that’s a problem. The NFL should probably do more to fix the optics regarding favoritism on the part of the officials for the Chiefs.
