Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Toronto Bluejays Failed to Reach Contract Extension
Keeping your best players is usually a good formula for success. But it is looking like Toronto may lose a big name from their roster after this upcoming season. On Tuesday, a bombshell went off in the baseball trenches; sources confirmed that Vladimir Guerrero Jr and the Toronto Bluejays failed to reach a contract extension.
There was a deadline in place in which some sort of deal needed to be reached. However, now that particular point has come and gone. With these new developments, the evidence seems to point towards Vladdy leaning towards free agency. Maybe not so much to be on another team (he says for now), but at least get a better, more lucrative contract.
Guerrero Jr loves being a Bluejay, he’s had some great memories with the organization. However, plenty of teams would love to have Vladimir on their team as well. He knows this. The Bluejays know it. And now other ball clubs will have an opportunity to “woo” him away.
What would Vladdy be potentially looking for in another team? Basically, a more successful one. He wants to win. Guerrero states plainly,
“Winning team. That’s what I’ll be looking for in free agency. As you guys know, my dad played a lot of years. He never won a World Series. My personal goal is to win a World Series and give the ring to my dad.”
Since being a part of the Bluejays organization, the franchise has yet to win a postseason game. Therefore, if winning now is of utmost importance, Vladimir will most likely be looking elsewhere, despite telling the media, “I will do anything, everything I can to stay here because I want to be here.”
Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Toronto Bluejays Failed to Reach Contract Extension
ESPN’s Jeff Passan discussed details surrounding this latest news coming from the Bluejays and Guerrero Jr’s camps. He reveals,
“Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays did not reach an agreement on a contract extension before his Monday-night deadline. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said he does not plan to negotiate a potential contract extension in-season, paving the way for him to reach free agency in November.
When asked if the Blue Jays were close to the contract number Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would have signed, his one-word answer: “No.”
Still, Guerrero said he would re-sign in free agency and wants to be a Blue Jay for life. He also said: Now, they’ll have to beat 29 other teams.”
Vladimir has a career .288 batting average. He hit at least 30 home runs in three of the past four seasons and drove in at least 90 runs in each season since 2021.
