Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics Less Than Year Away
It seems like the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics just concluded and here we are talking about the Winter Olympics. And rightfully so, because the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are less than a year away. In fact we are only 360 days away from the opening of the Olympic games. And 388 days from the Paralympic events. These games are younger than their summer cousin as they will be the XXV Winter Olympics. There have been 30 Summer Olympic Games beginning in 1896.
The upcoming winter event will be the first Olympic Games to officially be co-hosted by multiple cities. Milan will be hosting ice events, and the remaining events being hosted in clusters around Cortina and the Valtellina and Fiemme valleys. More than 3,500 athletes from 93 countries will be competing for 195 medals in 16 Olympic disciplines and six Paralympic sports. With beautiful Italian landscapes as the backdrop. Ski mountaineering is a new discipline added to the program.
It makes sense that ski mountaineering was added to the games. Apparently it is particularly popular in Italy, with deep historical and sporting roots in the Alpine regions. It is an exciting, exhausting, and adrenaline-filled sport that allows you to connect with nature and pristine landscapes. Ski mountaineering will feature three events: Men’s Sprint, Women’s Sprint and Mixed Relay. The races will take place in Bormio, in the Valtellina.
The opening ceremony will take place on Friday Feb. 6 2026 at the Milano San Siro Olympic Stadium. And the closing ceremony will happen on Sunday Feb. 16, 2026 at the Verona Olympic Arena. During that time some of the events taking place will be figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, and short track speed skating. Not to mention the curling, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are scheduled to feature 116 medal events in 16 disciplines, an increase of seven events and one discipline over Beijing 2022. New medal events will include men’s and women’s dual moguls in freestyle skiing, men’s and women’s doubles in luge (replacing the open doubles event), men’s and women’s team alpine combined, women’s large hill individual in ski jumping, and mixed relay team in skeleton. The Games will have the highest percentage of women’s participation in Winter Olympic history, at 47%.
