It was a blockbuster trade that turned the NBA world upside down. No one could seem to believe that the Dallas Mavericks traded their star player Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Laker. In exchange for one of their own stars, Anthony Davis along with Max Christie. But sadly after being traded to the Mavericks, it has been reported that Anthony Davis will miss several games. ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania posted about the Davis injury:
“Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis is expected to miss multiple weeks with a left adductor strain, sources tell ESPN. His absence could stretch to a month.”
To make matters worse, the injury happened in his debut game with the Mavericks against the Houston Rockets. The non-contact injury happened in the third quarter of the game, this past Saturday. He had played for 31 minutes while putting up 26 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists in the Mavs’116-105 victory over Houston. As a result of the injury, Davis will now miss the All-Star game slated for Feb. 16. So the NBA commissioner had to choose replacements for both Davis and Giannis Antetokounmpo who is out with a calf strain.
Originally Davis had told reporters that he didn’t believe the injury was serious. “Just the leg got tight, like a little spasm,” Davis said Saturday. “Just came back and tried to get it loose and everything. Obviously, dealing with the ab strain still, so just tried to get it loose. It wouldn’t really loosen up and let go, but it’s nothing serious. I’m fine.”
His abdomen muscle strain came with him from Los Angeles. That injury resulted in him missing the final two games he spent with the Lakers. But it also held him out of the Maverick’s 118-116 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers last Tuesday. However, now that he’s suffered the abductor strain he is going to miss a lot more games. If he is out for a full month he could sit out up to 20 games.

The league has since announced that Kyrie Irving will replace Davis in the All-Star game. This is Kyrie’s ninth career All-Star appearance. Irving is a great choice to replace Davis as he is averaging 24.1 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.6 rebounds in 2024-25 while shooting 40% from three-point land. And he is a big reason why the Mavericks remain in playoff contention. Trae Young has been selected to replace Giannis Antetokounmpo in the All-Star Game this weekend.
Clearly, the Mavericks would like to have Davis on the court that’s why they traded for him. But now the Mavericks will have to take a wait and see approach.
