2024 wasn’t his best season for production and he dealt with some injuries as well. And it seems that things have come to a head with him and his team. It was reported today that the San Francisco 49ers decided to grant Deebo Samuel permission to seek a trade partner. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted about the arrangement on x (formerly twitter):

“The 49ers have granted Deebo Samuel and his agent Tory Dandy permission to find a trade partner for the wide receiver, Samuel told ESPN. This comes after Samuel asked San Francisco to trade him during the players’ exit meetings after the season.”

“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle (Shanahan) because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel said today. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it’s best that we find another team.”

Although it’s not a done deal yet that Samuel will be gone from San Francisco most believe that a trade will eventually take place. And both sides appear to be comfortable with moving on from each other if it does happen. Their relationship apparently has deteriorated this past season as Samuel publicly complained about not getting the ball. But that is not an unusual complaint for wide receivers, they always want the ball.

However, fans complained that Samuel wasn’t producing enough to make such a demand. He had a career-low 51 catches (not including the injury-riddled 2020 season) with just 670 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a career-low 81 targets (not including 2020).

So with Samuel and his agent Tory Dandy having permission to seek a trade partner where could he land? Well it could be the Denver Broncos. They made the playoffs but were quickly bounced out in the Wild Card round. However, it looks like they have found their franchise quarterback in Bo Nix. And they have over $30 million in effective cap space according to Over the Cap. So they can afford to do an extension for Samuel.

The situation is similar for the New England Patriots. Drake Maye is their quarterback for the future and needs some offensive weapons. Plus the Patriots have over $110 million in cap space so they can afford to sign Samuel to a deal. Or maybe the Houston Texans might want to take a run at him. They lost Tank Dell to an extensive knee injury at the end of the season. And Stefon Diggs is recovering from an ACL tear and will be a free agent. So C.J. Stroud will need some receiving help.
