Buffalo Bills Great Micah Hyde Announced His Retirement

After a solid 12-year NFL career he is calling it quits. The former fifth-round draft pick of the 2013 NFL Draft has had enough. Although he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers his greatest impact on the game happened in Buffalo. So it is from that team, the Buffalo Bills, that the great leader Micah Hyde has announced his retirement. Hyde spent the first four years of his career with the Green Bay Packers from 2013-2016. In his first season he was the fifth ranked cornerback and kick/punt returner.

Due to the lack of depth at safety, in his second season, he transitioned to free safety. In that season he helped the Packers get to the playoffs where they defeated the Cowboys in the divisional round. But they lost to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game. The Packers reached the playoffs every year that Hyde was with the team. However, general manager at the time, Ted Thompson, failed to make Hyde a contract offer. He later apologized for not being able to work out a deal.

But it worked out well for Hyde who had been named one of the top sleeper free agents of 2016. On March 9, 2017, the Buffalo Bills signed Hyde to a five-year, $30.50 million contract that included $14 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $8 million. Head coach Sean McDermott named Hyde the starting free safety to begin the regular season, along with strong safety Jordan Poyer. Hyde and Poyer were one of the highest graded safety duos in 2017 and were considered as possibly the best tandem in the league by many NFL analysts and media members.

But more importantly, Hyde became one of Buffalo’s most important voices in the locker room. He was also a team captain for Buffalo in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The safety was a vocal leader and one that led by example. He deserves a lot of credit for helping create an incredible culture in Buffalo. Hyde spent the majority of the 2024 season as a free agent and was signed to Buffalo’s practice squad in December. The safety was brought back for his leadership and ability to help with younger players.

“We’ve always connected with this place,” Hyde said once he came back to Buffalo in December. “To see the reaction that people have with us signing back here is truly amazing. I think it’s an indication to how my family, the foundation (Imagine for Youth), everything has given back to this community, and we’ll continue to do that.”

Now it’s time for Hyde to start the next chapter of his life. In his words: So much LOVE and way too many THANKS! From Fostoria to Iowa City to Green Bay to Buffalo, the goal was to leave an impact. That was one helluva dream. On to the next. MH
