Las Vegas Raiders Hired Chip Kelly As Offensive Coordinator

They got their general manager, they got their head coach and now they have a new OC. Although he’s been around the college and professional levels for many years. In fact he is leaving the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes after being there last season as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. He’s been scooped up by the Las Vegas Raiders who hired Chip Kelly as their offensive coordinator. Per Sr. NFL Report at the MMQB Albert Breer:

“TheRaiders told candidates during their search they were making a serious commitment with an infusion of cash from the new owners. Here it is—Chip Kelly was lured to Vegas with a deal averaging $6 million per year, per sources. Kelly is now the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator. Give Mark Davis credit too—he prioritized finding partners who’d invest back in the team and it’s happening in a very big way now. DC Patrick Graham, who was already over $3 million per, got a raise to stay as well.

Kelly has spent the last seven years at the collegiate level, six of which were with UCLA as their head coach. Prior to that he worked in the NFL in 2016 as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers for a season which ended with a 2-14 record. And before that he spent 2012-2015 with the Philadelphia Eagles. As their head coach he went went 26-21 with one playoff appearance. Kelly has some history with head coach Pete Carroll. In 2009, Kelly’s Oregon Ducks took down Carroll’s USC Trojans. In the NFL Carroll was 3-0 as head coach of the Seahawks against Kelly while he was with the Eagles and 49ers. The two now working together should be an interesting dynamic.

Regarding the hiring of Kelly, Carroll had this to say:

“I’m really looking for people that have been with me, that understand the philosophy to some extent,” Carroll said at the time. “I [also] want guys that have never been around me before so they have to learn what we’re all about and we can watch the process of them learning what we’re all about and what we expect. And then I’m hoping that we can maintain some of the terrific coaches that are on the staff, too, so we can have the benefit of the insights that they bring and the continuity that they can generate for us. We want ball people. We want guys that love the game…also, it’s important to find people that can help us grow and challenge us and — I know in my history — I need people to keep me on track. As you can tell, I get pretty juiced up and I’m going to get going. I need people to keep me balanced.”

Carroll now has a complete staff so he can turn his attention to getting the Raiders into top shape.
