Athletes Unlimited Softball League Inaugural Draft Happening

Women’s sports has seen a definite uptick in interest from sports fans all over the world. No matter what the sport is, the numbers are revealing and that people can’t seem to get enough of the lady athletes. Women’s sports has grown so much that even Whoopi Goldberg saw the need to create a sports channel dedicated to them. Therefore, it’s no surprise that big things are happening in softball. Tonight the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) inaugural draft is happening. And guess who declared eligibility for the draft? None other than Maya Brady, niece to former NFL great Tom Brady. She is also the niece of former Major League Baseball All-Star Kevin Youkilis.

Brady had a very successful career playing softball at UCLA. She is a shortstop who can also play in the outfield. The 23-year old left-handed slugger is a three-time first-team All-American and two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year. She ranks second all time in home runs at UCLA, which is well-known for it’s outstanding college softball program. Her softball pedigree and family name will certainly be a boost to the fledgling league.

However, there are some other heavy-hitters joining the party such as Mia Sky Davidson-Smith, Amanda Lorenz and Amanda Scarborough. All of them anxiously await to see who will draft them. There will be a total of 81 world-class softball athletes vying for a roster spot on one of the four teams.

The AUSL is a professional women’s softball league featuring four teams playing a 24-game season in a traditional format. It will complement the existing AU Pro Softball Championship Season, which will be renamed the AUSL All-Star Cup. They want to expand and develop what professional softball can be in the US. The league launches in June 2025. And the four teams are:

Talons – Advisor Lisa Fernandez

Bandits – Advisor Jenny Finch

Volts – Advisor Cat Osterman

Blaze – Advisor Dana Sorensen

Kim Ng is the Senior Advisor (general manager) and she is a sports trailblazer herself. She was the first female MLB General Manager of the Miami Marlins. Ng is the first woman and first person of East Asian descent to lead a Major League Baseball front office, as well as the first female GM in the history of North American professional men’s sports. Under her leadership the Marlins clinched their fourth postseason berth in 2023. She’s clearly qualified to lead the AUSL to great things.

The draft, will be broadcast live on the ESPN app at 8 p.m. ET. Each of the four teams — the Bandits, Blaze, Talons and Volts, who will choose in that order in the first round — will draft a dozen players and fill out their 16-woman roster with one free agent and three players from the college class of 2025. Make sure you tune in!
