Commanders Zach Ertz Not Retiring Hopes to Return to Team
When your team makes it to the NFC Championship game it does kind of make you think. Washington had one heck of a turnaround season, going from being 4-13 the previous year to narrowly missing out on a trip to the Super Bowl. This success has one of their veteran players firm and determined to stay on the field and do what he can to help the Washington organization get another title. This week it was confirmed that the Commanders Zach Ertz is not retiring and hopes to return to and remain with the team.
24 hours after being defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles; Ertz had an announcement. He took a day to think things over, but was staunch in his decision. Zach told reporters,
“I don’t know what the future holds, I still want to play football next year. I just want to make that clear that I’m not retiring.
Just ’cause I had so much fun this year. I feel rejuvenated, I feel young. It’s the most amount of games I’ve played in a season at 34. I felt like I played good football this year. So, for me it’s just figuring out everything going forward. They know how I feel about this place.
Obviously it’s a two-way street. I can bang down the door saying I want to be here, but if they don’t want me here, then it’s a moot point.
This next month for me, is really a time to take a step back, get my body back to where it needs to be. Take a little bit of rest. For me, when I say I want to play football, it’s not just showing up in August saying getting ready to play football. It really is a year-round thing for me.
I still feel like at this age I can get better.”

And Ertz did look energetic this season. He was a work horse for the Commanders and held up well all season. And in the NFC title game he had highs of 11 receptions and 104 receiving yards. Throughout the season Ertz had 66 receptions for 654 yards and seven touchdowns.
Zach was on a one-year deal with the Commanders and now waits to see if Washington wants him to remain with the franchise. In all honesty, they should run it back with Ertz. After snagging up rookie (of the year) sensation Jayden Daniels in the draft the Commanders went 12-5 to earn its first playoff berth since 2020 and then marching to the NFC title game for the first time since 1991.
Zach and Daniels are a great offensive combination. Hopefully we get to see them together again later this fall. Since they both seem to have a fire burning strong within them to win a championship.
