Las Vegas Raiders Have Hired Pete Carroll as Their New Head Coach

The silver and black are making moves and in involves bringing in some veteran leadership in order to right the ship. On Friday it was officially announced that the Las Vegas Raiders have hired Pete Carroll as their new head coach. The news comes just 17 days after the Raiders fired HC Antonio Pierce after a 4-13 season.

Las Vegas had hoped that Pierce would usher in a new culture as well as era of success. However, that would unfortunately not be the case. Pierce went 5-4 to close the 2023 NFL season, including three divisional wins in the final four weeks. However, the 2024 season would go much differently. Pierce failed to match that win total over the 2024 season and the Raiders went winless against the AFC West for the first time since 2006. In 26 games as the Raiders’ head coach, Pierce went 9-17.

In AP’s defense, Vegas didn’t have much to work with. There are plenty of aspects that will need to be tended to if the team wishes to contend in a more competitive fashion. Such as a new franchise quarterback.

However, this week the Raiders took the another step towards building a stronger franchise. They secured a new GM, and now they have their coach. And Carroll has quite the résumé.

Pete Carroll has a 170-120-1 career record across his 18 seasons as an NFL head coach and won Super Bowl 48 with the Seahawks. Furthermore, Carroll is the third and most recent head coach to win a college football national championship and a Super Bowl along with Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer. Therefore, having a winning coach with experience that can understand to players at different levels is certainly a plus.

This new organizational move has Tom Brady written all over it. And if you felt that way too, you would be right. As Jacob Camenker of USA Today mentioned,

“Brady joined the Raiders as a part-time owner in 2024. He proceeded to help them land one of the most proven coaching candidates available on the market in Carroll. It initially seemed like Brady and the Raiders were going to have a difficult hiring cycle after Ben Johnson decided to join the Chicago Bearsdespite interest from Las Vegas. Brady and Co. quickly rebounded and getting a successful veteran like Carroll should help to slightly restore the Raiders’ image and hopefully put an end to Mark Davis’ ever-spinning coaching carousel.”

While some may point out Carroll’s age, the Raiders could really careless. They care about results. And if Pete is the guy to do that, they are riding with him. When Carroll coaches his first game in September, he will be the oldest head coach in NFL history. But after a year away, Pete is ready to go and ready for action.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the Raiders and Carroll news Friday afternoon stating, “Just in: Pete Carroll and the Raiders now have reached agreement on a three-year deal with a fourth-year team option, sources tell ESPN. Another veteran legendary coach has returned.” Yes, welcome back!
