Deshaun Watson Has Recovery Setback With Achilles Tendon
Things just haven’t gone well for the quarterback since joining the Cleveland Browns. And another issue has now arisen with the controversial signal-caller. Deshaun Watson has had an injury recovery setback with his Achilles tendon. And because the relationship between the Browns and Watson was already strained this latest setback could be the final straw. Ties could permanently be severed between the two parties.
According to AP News:
“The setback could end Watson’s unsteady stay with the Browns, who believed they had ended their decades-long search for a franchise quarterback when they signed the former Pro Bowler to a historic $230 million contract in 2022.
But things haven’t worked out — for either side — and the newest development could lead to a permanent separation between Watson and the team.”
The Cleveland Browns provided a medical update on QB Deshaun Watson:
“Yesterday, Deshaun Watson underwent a second surgery to repair his right Achilles tendon rupture. Watson initially tore the tendon during the Browns’ Week 7 game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 20. His first surgery was performed on Oct. 25. Earlier this week, when Watson reported to CrossCountry Mortgage Campus for his exit physical as part of the Browns’ season-ending process, he complained of discomfort after rolling his ankle in Miami. MRI results demonstrated a re-rupture to his Achilles tendon. Dr. Bob Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist in Charlotte, NC, performed both surgeries. Watson’s recovery time and return to play status is uncertain, and he will likely miss significant time during the 2025 season.”

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday:
“The quarterback ruptured his right Achilles again, further testing showed, and he had another surgery on Thursday to repair it, per sources informed of the situation. This new injury comes less than three months after the original tear and now Watson faces a longer road back. He could miss the entire 2025 season.”
With all the on the field and off the field drama with Watson, it seems inevitable that Cleveland will move on. Watson has played in just 19 of a possible 51 regular season games. In 2022, he was suspended 11 games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy following allegations he committed sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions. Watson then ended each of the past two campaigns on injured reserve. Cleveland has the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. They might have to use it to pick a quarterback.
