LA Kings Release Thoughts Regarding Those Affected By Palisades and Eaton Fires

What a week. Los Angeles has been ravaged by several deadly fires. With at least six confirmed fatalities, numerous injuries and a massive amount of homes and structures damaged or completely destroyed. Due to these serious implications, the NHL postponed the Los Angeles Kings’ home game Wednesday against the Calgary Flames; with several devastating wildfires still burning across the region. And the LA Kings released some thoughts regarding those affected by the Palisades and Eaton Fires.

The Kings and Calgary postponement was confirmed shortly before noon PT on Wednesday. About eight hours before the puck would have been dropped for the opening faceoff. The move and decision was made in the best interests of fans, players and staff. In order to keep one and all safe.

The league addressed the situation stating, “The thoughts of the entire NHL family are with the Kings, hockey fans and the people of the Los Angeles area during this difficult time. A makeup date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.”

Cancellations and postponements are occurring throughout the city. From the Academy Awards announcement to the People’s Choice Awards. Furthermore, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team also postponed its home game scheduled for Thursday night against the University of Portland at Firestone Field House on the school’s Malibu campus, the West Coast Conference announced. Pepperdine canceled classes Wednesday, and access to its coastal campus is restricted.

Nevertheless, the Kings, like the league, released a statement also this week. Regarding the fires they express,

“Our hearts are with our entire Los Angeles community. We appreciate the hard working first responders who are diligently working to contain the fire and protect our community. We appreciate the league’s support in keeping our fans, staff, and players safe.”

Other sports are also taking heed. The NFL is paying close attention to the potential impact of the fires on the two playoff-bound Los Angeles teams’ preparations. Such as the Rams’ wild-card postseason game against the Minnesota Vikings scheduled for Monday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. On Thursday, the Rams told the press and public that if need be, the game would change to a safer region and venue. However, as of now Monday’s playoff bout will still be held at SoFi Stadium.
