Las Vegas Raiders’ Antonio Pierce Latest Head Coach Casualty
He had been a member of the coaching staff before being promoted to interim head coach. That happened after the firing of Josh McDaniel during the 2023 season. Pierce was made the permanent head coach in 2024. However, Las Vegas Raiders’ Antonio Pierce has become the latest head coach casualty in the NFL. The Raiders didn’t add any context to the reason for his termination in their statement. But you can read it below:
“The Las Vegas Raiders have relieved Antonio Pierce of his duties as head coach.
We appreciate Antonio’s leadership, first as an interim head coach and this past season as the head coach. Antonio grew up a Raiders fan and his Silver and Black roots run deep. We are grateful for his ability to reignite what it means to be a Raider throughout the entire organization. We wish nothing but the best for Antonio and his family in the future.”
There was nothing mentioned in the statement about the performance of his duties as the head coach. Of course, the team didn’t have a good 2024 season. But to be fair, injuries played a factor in the disappointing season, with 12 players – seven of them starters – ending up on injured reserve at Week 18. And they also are in need of a quarterback. I don’t think Aidan O’Connell or Desmond Ridder is the answer. At his end-of-season press conference Monday, Pierce said, “… I need to go with my gut,” Pierce said. “I was better at that last year. This year, I didn’t do what I wanted to do as much as I wanted to do it.”
Per Adam Schefter, the Raiders are retaining GM Tom Telesco, per source. Raiders limited owner Tom Brady is expected to be part of a collaborative committee to interview head coaching candidates and support team owner Mark Davis, per league sources.

But the Raiders were right about Pierce reigniting what it means to be a Raider. His players had good things to say about him. Jakobi Meyers said after the Week 18 game:
“Shoutout to AP because he kept the guys motivated,” Jakobi Meyers said postgame. “Even when you’re losing so many in a row, that’s hard as a professional, that’s hard for a competitor in general. AP just did a great job this year of keeping us going, keeping us understanding what the goal is at the end of the day.”
Jack Jones also shared those sentiments: “We still were out there fighting as if we’re playing for the playoffs,” Jack Jones said.
One season isn’t enough for a coach to get established. Now Pierce will have to start over somewhere else.
