Jayden Daniels Prevailed In The NFC Rookie Quarterback Battle
He’s had a tremendous first year in the NFL and there’s talk of him being the Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, Michael Penix said hold on a minute, let me show you what I can do. One was drafted second by the Washington Commanders and the other was drafted eighth by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2024 NFL Draft. Both of them are highly talented but tonight only one could win. And it was Jayden Daniels who prevailed in the NFC rookie quarterback battle on his home field of Northwest Stadium.
It looked bad for the Falcons at the beginning of the game as Penix was intercepted on the opening drive. The Commanders made them pay for the mistake by going 38 yards in seven plays. Wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus scored the seven yard touchdown. But Penix was unphased as he and the offense answered with a touchdown score of their own. Each team then punted and the first quarter ended. So the Commanders were moving down the field when they were called for offensive holding. Daniels was then intercepted on the next play and the Falcons made them pay. They went 62 yards and Bijan Robinson scored the one yard touchdown. The Commanders punted again and the Falcons scored a 39-yard field goal. The halftime score was 17-7, Falcons.
To start the third quarter the Commanders went on a long drive that lasted almost eight minutes. But it was worth the time as Daniels found Zach Ertz in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown. After a six-yard sack of Penix, the Falcons went three and out and punted. In the fourth quarter the Commanders went on another long drive that ended with a touchdown. And their defense forced another Falcons’ punt.

The Commanders were driving again and scored a touchdown. But it was nullified due to an offensive holding penalty on Sam Cosmi. He had multiple holding penalties throughout the game. So they had to settle for a 31-yard field goal. Now the Falcons went on a long drive. It was 1st & 5 at WAS 5 when a high snap to Robinson went sailing past him. That put them at 2nd & 26 at WAS 26. On fourth down, Penix threw a laser to Kyle Pitts for the 13-yard touchdown tying the game.
Washington went a quick three and out and it was on to overtime. The Commanders won the toss and went 15 plays in a little over seven minutes to score the winning touchdown. Daniels looked angry as he orchestrated the drive. But with the 24-30 win his team has secured a playoff spot.
