Blowouts Were The Order Of The Day In Week 17

Blowouts Were The Order Of The Day In Week 17

There were competitive games during Week 17 but there were also some games that got out of hand. So much so that it felt like blowouts were the order of the day in Week 17. The blowouts started with the Ravens at the Texans on Christmas. The Texans offense couldn’t score, their only score in the game was a safety. Baltimore cruised to a 31-2 victory. And yesterday, the blowouts continued with the game between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Chargers. The Patriots scored a touchdown after the Chargers had already put up 17 points. But the Chargers went on to score another 20 points, winning the game 40-7.

Today there were more similar beat downs. We had the New York Jets visiting the Buffalo Bills. The Jets only had two possessions in the first half the first one ending with a turnover on downs. An interception was how their second possession ended. In fact the Jets didn’t score until the fourth quarter after QB Aaron Rodgers was taken out of the game. Backup Tyrod Taylor, a former Buffalo Bill, led two touchdown drives. But by then the damage had been done and the Bills won the game 14-40.

Another blowout took place in Tampa Bay where the Buccaneers faced off against the Carolina Panthers. There was a lot of scoring going on in the first half with the Panthers hanging tough with the Buccaneers. At halftime the score was 14-27 with the Panthers missing a field goal. But in the second half the blow out was on. QB Bryce Young was also sacked five times and Carolina did not score in the second half. The Buccaneers are back in first place in the NFC South and still in the playoff hunt.

Last but not least we had the divisional contest between the Cowboys and Eagles. Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson started the game with a pick-six. Dallas responded with a touchdown but that would be their only score of the game. Saquon Barkley added to the win with his 167 yards rushing. He only needs 101 more yards to break Eric Dickerson’s rushing record. By the time the fight ended and the dust settled the final score was 7-41. And the Eagles clinched the NFC East division.

On a side note, with the Patriots loss and the New York Giants win, the No. 1 draft pick now belongs to the Patriots. I’m not sure why there were so many lopsided scores. Maybe because it was Week 17 some teams didn’t care about losing. We’ll see if the last week of the season will be just as bad.
