Kansas City Chiefs Hang On and Outlast the Houston Texans

It didn’t look like the high ankle sprain Mahomes suffered in the previous game was an issue. And Hollywood Brown looked comfortable in his first game of the regular season. But the Houston Texans came to play not intimidated by the No. 1 playoff seed. But in the end the Kansas City Chiefs were able to hang on and outlast the Houston Texans.

The Texans started the game and picked up a first down. Then they had two negative plays. And the third play was an interception of a pass intended for Nico Collins. Kansas City took advantage of the turnover with Mahomes capping off a 13 play drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Things went better for the Texans on their second drive but they had to settle for a 33-yard field goal. Houston’s defense forced a three and out on the Chiefs second.

Stroud found Collins and Tank Dell on some nice passes on their next possession. But it was Dalton Schultz who grabbed the 10-yard touchdown catch giving the Texans the lead. But the Chiefs went on another long drive of 17 plays lasting 5:31. At one point Mahomes was sacked, fumbled the ball and Henry To’oTo’o ran it back for a touchdown. But it was overturned and ruled an incomplete pass. A roughing the passer penalty was tacked on. The Chiefs came away with a 3-yard rushing Kareem Hunt touchdown.

Houston was moving the ball well and was at the KC 30 when they were called for offensive holding. That put a damper on the drive taking them out of field goal range. Then CJ Stroud was intercepted and the Chiefs got the ball with :52 on the clock. Harrison Butker increased the lead with a 44-yard field goal. The score was 10-17 at halftime.

The Chiefs punted on their opening third quarter drive. CJ Stroud started the third quarter with a deep incomplete pass. However, he followed that with a 17 yard pass to Robert Woods. Joe Mixon ran for three yards and then Stroud hit Tank Dell in the end zone with a 30-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed. Unfortunately, Dell suffered a serious knee injury and was driven off the field. Stroud and his teammates were clearly emotional about the injury to Dell and the tears flowed.

The Chiefs scored another touchdown and the Texans responded with a field goal. But the wind had been taken out of their sails. The Texans couldn’t move the ball while the Chiefs added on one more field goal. After one last Houston punt the Chiefs ran out the clock and got the 19-27 win.
