Juan Soto and Mets Agree to 15-Year $765 Million Contract; Largest in Sports History!
War is over New York fans. The saga has come to a conclusion and we finally now know where the man of the hour will play out his Major League Baseball days. On Sunday night, it was announced that free agent Juan Soto and the Mets agreed to a 15-Year $765 million contract; which is the largest ever in MLB and sports history!
So then, Soto is staying on the east coast. Something that mattered since it would allow him to remain near his family. Additionally, this means he will also stay in New York. Just for the other franchise in town.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan confirmed the news stating, “BREAKING: Superstar outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Mets are in agreement on a 15-year, $765 million contract, sources tell ESPN. It is the largest deal in professional sports history.”
During this offseason five teams were in the mix: the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. Only four out of the five teams had offered Soto a deal in the $700 million dollar arena. The Dodgers were the sole team to place an offer in the realm of $600 million in front of Juan. And as we now see, Soto opted to go for the bigger money.

Soto has looked very attractive to ball clubs due to his ability to draw walks, already won a championship, helped the Yankees end their drought of appearing in the Fall Classic; and of course, his batting. Juan’s defense is not the best compared to other players; but his shining offensive efforts are deemed generational. In seven major league seasons, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Soto has hit .285/.421/.532 with 201 home runs and 592 RBIs and has accumulated more than 36 wins above replacement.
Plus, Juan comes packaged with tons of accolades to boot. He is already a four-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger, batting champion, Home Run Derby champion and World Series champion. And his 769 career walks are the most ever for a player through his age-25 season — 99 more than second-place Mickey Mantle.
But agent Scott Boras is not surprised by Soto’s big payday. Juan may not be a two way player like the other $700 million dollar man, Shohei Ohtani; but that doesn’t matter. As Boras says, “You cannot base a centurion player’s value on other players. You have to base it on financial markets.”
Juan Soto is a New York Met
So let’s now briefly go into a few more details about this signing. First of all, were the Yankees close? Well, the problem definitely wasn’t money. Yankees came with a solid offer.
Basically, Juan turned down $5 million to pay elsewhere. As Jon Heyman reports, “Yankees bid $760M for 16 years. Soto is a Met.”
Interesting. Nevertheless, what are some other pertinent factors surrounding Juan’s contract? For one thing, Soto could possibly make more. Bob Nightengale mentions,
“Wait, if Juan Soto’s 15-year, $765 million contract wasn’t stunning enough, it can actually be worth $805 million. If the Mets want to void Soto’s opt out after the 2029 season, they must increase his annual salary from $51 million to $55 million beginning in 2030.”
Major coin. In fact, the Washington Nationals crew that Soto was a part of have garnered billions. The 2018 Nationals had six players whose next long-term contracts would combine for $2.015 billion: Soto ($765M), Harper ($330M), Turner ($300M), Rendon ($245M), Strasburg ($245M) and Scherzer ($130M). It pays to be talented.
Juan Soto and New York Mets Agree to Contract
Soto has been exciting to watch in stadiums all across the country. However, Mets fans will be especially thrilled with how Juan has performed at their own home stadium. SNY’s Will Sammon reveals,
“Juan Soto’s bat works everywhere. His numbers at Citi Field, though, are something else. In 35 career games at Citi Field (146 plate appearances), Soto has a 1.175 OPS with 12 home runs, including two of the five longest home runs in the stadium’s history (466 feet, 463 feet).”
Therefore, this contract and agreement looks to be a match made in baseball heaven. Juan got the deal he was after and the Mets get a player that not only brings eyes to a franchise but an offensive edge. Here’s how Soto’s mega deal stacks up to the Top 10 contracts in the MLB.
