Kate Martin Selected to Play For Golden State Valkyries
What a year! Kate Martin had attended the 2024 WNBA draft in order to support her best friend and the number one overall pick, Caitlin Clark. However, that very evening she got the surprise of her life while sitting in the audience; she got drafted herself to 2023 champions, the Las Vegas Aces. But now the talented baller has another big change coming her way… joining a new highly anticipated expansion team. On Friday, Kate Martin was selected to play for the Golden State Valkyries.
Martin is very thankful to the Aces for giving her a fun, thrilling start in the W. She had an amazing time with the team. And felt she had been developing nicely under the influence of all the players there. Players such as Kelsey Plum as well as A’ja Wilson. However, she is ready for the exciting challenge that now lies before her.
In fact, Kate told the panel hosting the Golden State Valkyries WNBA expansion draft on ESPN, “I’m really excited. This league is all about opportunity, and you just need one shot, right? I’m very thankful for the Aces and everything I got to learn there, but I’m really excited for this new beginning and to build something from the ground up.”

This pick of the Valkyries is also a bit of a reunion for Martin and the head coach. Kate has previous experience playing under the Valkyries’ new head coach Natalie Nakase; who served as an assistant coach with the Aces last season. Furthermore, Martin was asked what should players expect when they play for Nakase. Kate states,
“I mean, Coach Nakase is somebody you’re going to want to run through a brick wall for. She’s a truth teller, and she’s going to be honest with you. But she balances that with unwavering love and support 100%. Those are the kinds of coaches you just want to give your all for, and I’m sincerely thankful we built a relationship in Las Vegas, which we’ll continue in San Francisco.”
