Baltimore Ravens Suspended Diontae Johnson For One Game
We’re used to hearing about the league suspending players for various reasons. However, it’s not often that a team suspends one of its own players. But yesterday the Baltimore Ravens announced that they had suspended WR Diontae Johnson for one game. It’s even more unusual because Johnson was just traded to the Ravens from the Panthers at the end of October. Being so new to the team you wonder how they got to this point. Well this is what the Ravens Executive Vice President and General Manager Eric DeCosta said in a short statement:
We have made the difficult decision to suspend Diontae Johnson for our upcoming game against the New York Giants for conduct detrimental to the team.
Diontae’s suspension stems from refusing to enter our game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
We will have no further comments on this matter going forward.
The Ravens will be on their bye in Week 14. So Johnson will miss the Week 15 game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. To this point in the season, Johnson’s role on the team has been limited. Johnson has one catch in five games since joining the Ravens. His absence from the Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles was noticeable as he had no snaps. After Rashod Bateman limped off the field with a sore knee he was replaced by Tylan Wallace instead of Johnson.
When asked about it on Monday, after the game, head coach Harbaugh gave a vague response:
“At this time, I’m going to have to wait just to clarify it,” Harbaugh said. “There’s some moving parts there that we’re going to have to figure out and explore and just see where we’re at. I know that’s not the answer you want, but that’s the best I can do in fairness to everybody right now.”
Baltimore Ravens Suspended Diontae Johnson For One Game
It’s been a tough time for Johnson trying to find a team he can be happy with. The Steelers let him go because they wanted to be a run first team and they have George Pickens. Then he went to the Panthers and wasn’t happy there either and he was traded to the Ravens. Now it seems things are not going well for him in Baltimore either. Johnson is 28 years old and still has a lot to offer but he is in a contract year. So will he remain with the Ravens or try to get traded again?
At this point we don’t know what will be the next step after his one-game suspension is served. But I would think he would want to stay with the Ravens having Lamar Jackson at quarterback.
