Regarding this latest move from the Women’s National Basketball Association; Cathy Engelbert, commissioner of the WNBA states,
“WNBA Commissioner here in the Bay Area at Chase Center. We’re so excited to be announcing today our 13th team in the WNBA; expansion franchise here in the Bay Area. Playing here at the state of the art Chase Center. Let’s go!”

WNBA Golden State- Expansion Team Coming to the Bay Area!
This announcement for women’s basketball is coming at the right time. Viewership for the women’s league is at an all time high. Back towards the end of September (2023); the WNBA released some interesting stats. In regards to viewership, they state,
“The WNBA on ABC averaged 627,000 viewers, making it the most-viewed regular season on ABC in 11 years. The 2023 WNBA Regular Season reached over 36 million total unique viewers across all national networks, the highest since 2008 and up 27 percent from 2022.”
This boost is coming from more basketball ladies becoming household names as well as some much needed celebrity support. For example, hip hop artist Lil’ Wayne was spied sitting courtside with his crew during an Aces game. The WNBA is finally getting more of a “cool factor;” along with dynamic, competitive players.
Such a combination is not only making the game more fun to watch, but is encouraging the development of new fans. Furthermore, expanding the league to an area already known for being a sports town; also helps to give the WNBA brand even more push. A very good move.
