49ers Christian McCaffrey Suffers Knee Injury in Loss to Buffalo Bills

This gives new meaning to adding insult to injury. Not only did San Francisco lose Sunday evening’s game, but they had to watch the Bills clinch the AFC East. And they have also now lost one of their big time star players… scratch that, have lost two running backs. Yes it is true, 49ers Christian McCaffrey suffers a knee injury in the loss to the Buffalo Bills but the northern Californian franchise also is down another RB.

What a night. It was cold. It snowed like crazy. And the conditions were not the best for any guy despite wearing cleats.

However, these are the type of games many football fans love the most. They are a retro throwback to the days of sweat, grit and brawn. The days when football was hardcore.

However, as entertaining as such matchups truly are, they can be dangerous. One wrong step or move and a player can be out for a game, or several; or the rest the season. As Nick Wagoner of ESPN reports,

“What the Niners didn’t know then was that not only were they going to lose McCaffrey for the season’s final five games but that Jordan Mason, McCaffrey’s backup, was also likely finished for 2024.

On Monday afternoon, all of that became the Niners’ new reality as coach Kyle Shanahan announced that McCaffrey’s posterior cruciate ligament injury would keep him out for about six weeks and that Mason suffered a high ankle sprain in the 35-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Both players are expected to land on injured reserve, according to Shanahan.”

Fortunately, for Christian McCaffrey he will not require surgery. VERY good news. Sometimes the invasiveness of surgery can have a serious effect on athletes. Some never truly returning back to full form. But at least for Christian, such an avenue of treatment will be unnecessary.

Nevertheless, Coach Shanahan had some words regarding Christian. It is a tough loss in the lineup for the 49ers. Shanshan states,

“I just feel for him. It was a real frustrating year for him. He worked his ass off to get back to this point and I think he was really feeling good and about to take off. He just had that real unfortunate injury last night. I know he’s as crushed as anyone, but he’ll get through this. He’s a hell of a player, a hell of a person and an unbelievable 49er. And he’ll be back stronger than ever next year to help us.”

But there’s a light shining at the end of the tunnel. Isaac Guerendo will be stepping up to fill in. The 24-year-old Guerendo was a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He had four carries for 19 yards and a touchdown against the Buffalo Bulls. Nice.

Furthermore, Shanahan also announced that safety Talanoa Hufanga (wrist) will open his practice window this week as he continues to work his way back from IR. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Kevin Givens will be placed on IR after suffering a torn pectoral against the Bills. As one can see, the Bills game wrecked havoc on a franchise already dealing with a slew of injuries. Therefore, hoping everyone continues to recover and heal up fast in San Francisco.
