Buffalo Bills Put 49ers On Ice And Clinched AFC East Division

As usual Buffalo was buried in snow. But of course the show must go on and the grounds crew did a great job of clearing the field. Unfortunately the snow started up again after kickoff and soon coated the field. However, that didn’t stop the Buffalo Bills as they put the San Francisco 49ers on ice and clinched the AFC East division. It took a little time for both teams to get adjusted to the playing conditions. The Bills went three and out on the opening possession of the game. But once they found their footing, there was no stopping them.

The 49ers got off to a good start with some tough running by Christian McCaffrey. But once they were in the red zone the Bills defense shut down McCaffrey and the 49ers kicked a 33-yard field goal. They missed two field goal attempts after that while the Bills scored three touchdowns in the first half. There were many times when the 49ers were slipping and sliding on the field on both sides of the ball. Running routes had to be broken down to the simplest form. Up and in or up and out, nothing fancy. And even then the receivers were falling down due to the snowy, icy field. McCaffrey went down after a short dump off pass and didn’t return to the game.

Meanwhile the Bills were scoring in just about any way you can imagine. James Cook caught a short pass and did a tight-rope run down the sideline for the 65-yard touchdown. Josh Allen found Mack Hollins in the front corner of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown. Hollins kept his toes inbound as a 49ers defender sailed past him trying to break up the pass. The first half ended with the Bills up 21-3.

Things were looking up for the 49ers at the start of the third quarter. Deebo Samuel set them up with great field position after a 60-yard kickoff return. But when they got to 1st & 4 at BUF 4 Kyle Juszczyk had the ball punched out of his hands. Buffalo recovered it but the offense couldn’t take advantage and had to punt. The 49ers did score a touchdown in the third quarter but that was it for their offensive output. Josh Allen made a great play after tossing a pass to Amari Cooper. Cooper was surrounded by 49ers so he tossed the ball back to Allen who then ran a couple yards and dove over the end zone pylon for the touchdown.

And to cap off his very successful night he ran eight yards for another touchdown. He is the first quarterback to ever score a receiving, passing and rushing touchdown. Ironically, Christian McCaffrey was the last person to score that way in 2022.

It was a rough night for the 49ers losing by 25 points or more for the second week in a row. However, they have been missing key players throughout the season like Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Brown and Nick Bosa. And it looked like tonight they may have lost McCaffrey again.

Buffalo Bills Set New Franchise Record

Sitting at 9-2, the Buffalo Bills are the AFC East Division Champions for a franchise-record fifth consecutive season. With the 35-10 victory over the 49ers they clinched the division title and guaranteed themselves a playoff spot. And they clinched it with 5+ games left in the regular season. The last team to do that was the Indianapolis Colts in 2009.

Buffalo is now 20-2 in December and January regular season games since 2020, which includes a 15-game win streak in the regular season. Buffalo is 26-6 in regular season games at home since the 2021 season. This season is looking like really good for the Bills. Will the Bills be the team to spoil the Chiefs quest for a three-peat? We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out.
