Alright Coach, we see you! Many former players tend to go into coaching. They have the skills, experience and most importantly knowledge to help shape and develop a young core. That is exactly what we are seeing from yet another former NFL athlete. Give a round of applause to Coach Eddie George of Tennessee State who has the most wins in a single season since 2013.

Yes, Eddie is doing something with Tennessee State that has not been witnessed in over a decade. What’s more interesting to us is that a lot people are not even discussing or talking about this feat. Nonetheless, George has helped to steer the ship towards victory; leading Tennessee to a 8-3 record.

But George is focused. He is zeroed in on making sure his team is well prepared to face their next opponent and challenge. The No. 25 Tigers (8-3, 5-2) have the chance to win the Big South/Ohio Valley Conference championship on Saturday; against No. 11 Southeast Missouri (9-2, 6-1) at Nissan Stadium (3:30 p.m. CT, ESPN+).

Eddie is no stranger to this level of competition. In college he thrived. Even becoming a Heisman Trophy winner in 1995. Moreover, in the NFL he still shined brightly on the field.

In a presser on Thursday, Eddie George mentioned that Tennessee State football’s title bid reminds him of his Super Bowl season. Can you remember that NFL season? Well, it was basically 25 years ago. At that time Eddie George was an All-Pro running back leading the Tennessee Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV. The Super Bowl played in 2000 had the famous game-ending play as Kevin Dyson (Titans player) stretched his arm BARELY missing on breaking the plane and getting a touchdown. Time expired on the clock and the Rams won the game. But we digress.

Getting to the Super Bowl is not easy. And Eddie George understands that. Just how he is aware it is not about just getting to “the big game” but winning it. George states,

“Back then looking 25 years into the future I thought I would be on a boat somewhere smoking a Liga Privada (cigar) with my wife and kids. Or maybe playing a round of golf and bragging to my boys in the clubhouse about shooting a club record. It’s amazing how things work out.

In the Super Bowl, we fell one yard short of crossing the goal line and tying the game against the (St. Louis) Rams,” George said. “Here we are again with the opportunity to cross the goal line at home against a quality opponent.”

Yes, it will definitely be a good game. And a very good watch for college football fans. Be sure to tune in on ESPN+.
