Colts Name Anthony Richardson Their Starting Quarterback

He’s in, he’s out and he’s in again. It’s been an up and down season for the second year quarterback and now he’s up once more. The Indianapolis Colts decided to name Anthony Richardson their starting quarterback making the announcement yesterday. During head coach Shane Steichen’s media availability he informed everyone of the change. So after two weeks of being on the bench Richardson has shown his coach enough to put him back in the No. 1 spot.

Two weeks ago, Steichen had indicated that a pathway forward very much remained for the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. The coach had advised Richardson that he wanted to see improvement, “…in the attention to detail in everything he does. From the classrooms, to the walkthroughs, to practice, to the weight room, all those little things have to be at a higher standard and that’s what was talked about.”

Steichen went on to say that, “Over the last two weeks he’s made strides in those areas, big time strides, becoming a Pro’s Pro. We’ve never lost faith or belief in him and his abilities. He’s going to start this week and he’s going to start the rest of the season.”

As for Richardson, he feels that the benching was definitely helpful to him:

“Just show I’m willing to be a pro, I’m willing to sacrifice anything that I need to do for the team,” Richardson said. “I feel like these past two weeks, it’s definitely opened my eyes and allowed me to have the opportunity to do that and just take a deeper dive and look into myself and see what I’m really made of. I’m thankful for these past two weeks and I’m low-key glad they happened.”

One reporter asked why he was explaining the benching now while letting Richardson take a public beating for two weeks. Steichen said that they wanted to keep a lot of things in-house because there are 53 guys in the locker room. Therefore, he said that they held a team meeting to make it clear that Richardson is their franchise quarterback going forward. Making that known would help to avoid sending a mixed message, get everyone on the same page and be ready to roll for their next game.

Richardson doesn’t seem to be any worse for wear after the very public benching. If it helps him to become the franchise quarterback they want to see then I guess it was worth it. The Colts will face the 3-7 Jets on Sunday. Will we see a new and improved Richardson?
