Denver Broncos Extended Jonathon Cooper Traded Baron Browning

Today’s the trade deadline and teams have been very busy. Yesterday afternoon featured movement among outside linebackers. The Denver Broncos extended OLB Jonathon Cooper while they traded OLB Baron Browning. They signed Jonathon Cooper to a four-year extension through 2028. And they secured a sixth-round pick from Arizona for free agent-to-be Baron Browning pending a physical. Details about Cooper’s compensation were provided by Adam Schefter:

“Comp update: Broncos awarded pass rusher Jonathon Cooper with a four-year, $60 million extension that includes $33 million guaranteed, per source.”

Although he was a seventh round pick for the Broncos in the 2021 NFL Draft, Cooper has established himself as a key starter on Denver’s defense. He is also in elite company when it comes to sacks and tackles. Since the start of 2023, Cooper is one of six defenders to record at least 100 tackles and 14 sacks, joining Maxx Crosby, Danielle Hunter, T.J. Watt, Khalil Mack and Harold Landry III.

Cooper has started 35 of the Broncos’ last 36 games and recorded 193 tackles, 18.5 sacks, 20 tackles for loss, 38 quarterback hits, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, an interception and a defensive touchdown to begin his career. Cooper is the third member of the Broncos’ 2021 draft class to receive an extension, joining cornerback Pat Surtain II and guard Quinn Meinerz. So it was a pretty good draft year for the Broncos being able to identify that much talent.

However for Browning as one door closes another one opens. Browning was also class of 2021 for the Broncos taken in the third round. However, his production has not been as impressive as Cooper’s.

Browning has posted 9.5 sacks in 43 career games. He recorded seven tackles and one tackle for loss in two starts and five games this season. Cooper has almost double the number of sacks in 36 career games as Browning has had in 43 career games. And to make matters worse, Browning has been on the Injured Reserve since Week 2. Since then his replacement in the starting lineup, Nik Bonitto, has recorded six sacks over the last seven games. Of course, this isn’t meant to be a knock against Browning. It just shows how teams have to consider all factors when trying to put the best players on the field.

As a pass rusher, there’s no doubt that Browning can contribute to Arizona’s defense. But for the Broncos they chose to go with Jonathon Cooper and third-round pick Jonah Elliss at outside linebacker. It’s always our hope that players end up in the best possible situation no matter where they land.
