Buccaneers Came Close To Ending Chiefs Undefeated Streak

They gave the Chiefs a run for their money and even scored the first touchdown of the game. As they battled all game long, the Buccaneers came close to ending the Kansas City Chiefs undefeated streak. Tampa Bay’s QB Baker Mayfield was efficient, completing 23 of 31 passes and not turning the ball over. His stats were similar to Patrick Mahomes’. His offensive line did well protecting him allowing time for him to find his open receivers.

On their opening drive, the Chiefs moved steadily downfield. Near the end of the drive it looked like Xavier Worthy caught a pass at the Bucs 2-yard line. However, he was out of bounds and on the next play the Bucs sacked Mahomes forcing a punt. Mayfield and his offense picked up a first down on his opening drive. But then he had a pass that was almost intercepted and another that was batted down so they had to punt. After both teams settled down after their opening drives the action heated up.

Mahomes had his team on the move and the Bucs defense missed opportunities to sack him. But they did blow up a run play and a couple plays later it was 4th & 12. Harrison Butker kicked a 40-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. The Bucs took the field and got their run game going.  They got down to the Chiefs 7-yard line and with excellent blocking Rachaad White ran the ball in for the 7-yard touchdown. The Chiefs responded with a field goal and the score was 7-10 at the half.

The Buccaneers defense kept getting the Chiefs into third downs but then would get burned with the zone coverage. Mayfield was without his top receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. But Sterling Shepard, Rakim Jarrett and Trey Palmer stepped up.

Meanwhile Mahomes had newly acquired WR DeAndre Hopkins as a new shiny weapon and he made full use of him. In the fourth quarter, Mahomes came up limping after throwing a touchdown to Samaje Perine. From one angle at first glance it looked as though he was beyond the line of scrimmage when he threw the ball; but during replay his body was far from being completely over. Therefore, the touchdown stood. Moreover, after being helped off the field Mahomes was soon back in action on the Chiefs next possession. As Kansas fans know, the guy just has no quit.

Furthermore, towards the end of regulation Mayfield also led a masterful drive down the field to help his team score the tying touchdown. But of course, in overtime, the Chiefs got the ball first and went right down the field to score the winning touchdown. So they’re still undefeated and looking strong despite injuries. But silver lining for the Buccaneers; the offense still works even without their top receivers. And performed despite it raining like crazy.
