Las Vegas Raiders Have Fired Some Offensive Coaches

After another dismal outing for the team yesterday, some changes have been made. The Las Vegas Raiders announced that they have fired some of their offensive coaches. They posted the following on social media: We have relieved Luke Getsy, James Cregg, and Rich Scangarello of their duties with the Las Vegas Raiders. Luke Getsy was their offensive coordinator, James Cregg was the offensive line coach and Rich Scangarello was the QB coach. In a press conference this morning, head coach Antonio Pierce had this to say regarding the firings:

“Yeah, just performance results and production just wasn’t heading in the direction I wanted it to go. And I’ll use the next 24 to 48 hours to sit down with the staff and figure out who’s going to call the offense going forward.” When asked if Desmond [Ridder] will be the quarterback going forward, Pierce replied, “I’m using the bye week to look at everything.” He also said it was 100% his decision to make these changes. Interestingly, this is the second firing for Getsy in the calendar year. He was dismissed in January as the Bears offensive coordinator.

It’s clear the Raiders have struggled with the quarterback position this season. Gardner Minshew started the season and was benched in favor of Aidan O’Connell. However, he didn’t upgrade the position and then suffered a thumb injury in Week 7. So that put Minshew back to QB1. But he was benched again yesterday in the blowout loss to the Bengals and replaced by Desmond Ridder. Even with all the issues on the offensive side of the ball, we have to acknowledge what’s going on with the defensive side. They’re supposed to be a really good defense, but that has not been the case this season.

Including yesterday’s loss, the Raiders defense have given up more than 30+ points in four games. One of which was against AFC West division rival Denver Broncos, not good. Some wonder if it is a culture change that needs to take place within the organization. Players complained when Josh McDaniels was the head coach, apparently he was too strict. Now it seems as if Antonio Pierce, a “players’ coach” may be too lax. Former NFL GM Mike Lombardi had some thoughts on the matter:

“The Raiders made coaching changes yesterday, but why did they stop at Luke Getsy? Las Vegas needs a complete remodel. And Antonio Pierce isn’t qualified to remodel a living room, let alone an NFL franchise.”

Ouch! The Raiders have a lot of issues to address and not a lot of time to do it.
